Faroutsider do you understand what it means when someone is mentally damaged or mentally ill from drug use? His response to an exceedingly nasty divorce thanks to his possessed ex-wife Sherry was to go on a drug binge with the rainbow gathering crowd for a few years. He's not well at all.
The teen age girl also needs to take responsibility for where she stays and well as her parents. John gave me a tour of the "Healing Center", I wanted to observe the scene and also assess his condition and was not remotely comfortable there. Have never seen so much drug use in my life, didn't recognize any of the kids as they kept offering me questionable food and drink. As if this crew is flying in just for the drug fest.
No one is advocating for him in what I've read here, just saying he was once a very nice guy. Now he's clearly disassociated. Pretty sad situation. God bless them all.

Opihikao, mahalo for your concern.
The neighborhood too is very concerned especially about the underage drug use and the noise disturbances which include noise at any time of day and night often with loud screaming. A Neighborhood Watch was formed because of it. The Police are very concerned also, but seemingly the prosecution does not have enough do something even after John was arrested multiple times. It's a very concerning and even dangerous situation.
John claims that the castle is under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Hawai'i, maybe it would help if some representatives of the LHG came and told him that it is not pono what's going on.

Thanks for the info. Yes I'm ignorant concerning such things. I do know that being deemed mentally ill used to mean you were at risk of being institutionalized. Now, this means prison. Or just jail for a day or two and a ticket off the island. Unless you're nice and have a little $$$.

Written surprisingly well JDW, though your vision of home would best be shared or delivered to our area youth and out of touch politicians.
Maybe a nice resort or two(poihiki)that promoted work, work ethic, morals, values, EBT as supplement, and a reasonable stay could curb the latest psychonautical adventures you write so highly of? The options may be good for many different folks both visitors and locals who could learn or experience different strokes if given the opportunities. Only so many can grad here and score the good jobs as hair stylist, county work, or police perks. I do agree with you for the most part, just not ready to give up or discredit all those just trying to Survive in this sacred and mighty jungle of ours.
Don't think I need or want my teenagers knowing anymore about what happens at our areas castle house or the current government underground sheems and fads being promoted here currently.

After watching the construction of the CH and apparent failed B&B I applaud the efforts and condemn the establishment.
Excellent site, view, home should have drawn enough tourists to make a comfortable living for John and Sheri.
Instead, they ran into the establishment that constrained a valid business and yet cannot shut down every illegal transient accommodation host.
Every regulation, tax, and rule layed rained cannon balls at the castle from above.
Every home owner renting a room, guest house, or vacation rental helped destroy them by flooding the moat with empty rooms at cheaper prices. Vaction rental by owner is your best place to see this.
Sheri and John should still be together.
Come to think of it I should be at my home too. Instead for years I was driven from home to pay the bills. Ironically I helped finance the very same people that opened up their homes to tourists and took away business from my own licensed B&B.
However, legal businesses in Puna Hawaii are forced to cope with the environment where tourism can only be promoted in Kona.
Illegal tourist competition is permited to thrive. There are on VRBO 459 vacation rentals in Puna. From my understanding of transient accommodation law that a licensed B&B must follow, that makes 459 competitors with an illegal edge. On one website alone!
It is not Sheri and John that were disfunctional. It is addressing tourism and business in Puna in general that is disfunctional.

Not sure who's blowing smoke here. The castle failed as a B&B because the place was filthy, Sheri wouldn't keep it up to standards, preferred to get high than take care of the place. Food was disgusting, she'd have the dog in her kitchen, dog hair everywhere. Put her food in the food, lick her finger and put it back in the food again, oh, AFTER petting her dog. Towels stunk, but she'd refuse to replace with clean ones. The curtains were moldy, mold everywhere. She'd enter guest rooms when they were gone, then lie about it. Guests were frankly mostly disgusted, left early, wouldn't return and wrote bad reviews.
Bad implementation of bad concept. "Castle" in Puna? It was a mainland drug fantasy, never much aloha about it. 10 years here and Sheri never found hers.
