Obviously, once again, the entire problem is due to corporate greed and corruption. Technology and cost effectiveness have nothing to do with it. Since so many here know that everything lacking in their selfish little lives is all due to corporate raping, why not take matters into your own hands? Get tin cans and string, run your own network. Remember, it just corporate greed and corruption that is preventing south Puna to be "wired", so this will work. It removes all the collusion, corruption, and vile behavior that "they" have, obviously not the people that have these constant finger-pointing accusations swirling around in their minds. Technology infrastructure investment costs, and risks, have nothing to do with anything, by majority rule here. The people have spoken, so let it be done.

I think the solution is to ignore Hawaiian Telcom and instead focus your energies on forcing Oceanic Time Warner to live up to the their existing franchise license/agreement with the County of Hawaii.

Start with your council rep, the Mayor, etc...

The franchise agreement Oceanic has is with the State of Hawaii, not the County of Hawaii. The DCCA-CATV division oversees OTWC's compliance with their franchise obligations.

The FCC has started a rural broadband initiative, Obama-phones is related to that. The simple story is the FCC doesn't know how to solve the last-mile conditions with any single solution. They are strongly urging the telcos to step in, since the old copper lines are all over. Just like cell towers, DSL needs small repeater stations, needing a lot to lease, have backup and storage power. HawaiianTel knows that a repeater station would last about 1 month in south Puna before it was stripped. Again, what the people want, the people get.

I'm thinking we could blockade the TMT to get broadband....? Might not make sense at first, but along the way we can say it's about more than the TMT...? Just thinking out loud.

Get tin cans and string, run your own network.

This only works until the incumbents bribe (sorry, "lobby") for legislation making community broadband illegal. It's happened in several states.

DSL needs small repeater stations, needing a lot to lease, have backup and storage power.

No, there are suitcase-sized micro-DSLAMs that get their upstream bandwidth and power from a bundle of T1s, all Telcom has to do is splice these into their existing copper plant at strategic locations.

Again, this assumes the goal is to provide service, which is more-or-less obviously not the case.

Thanks for the link. We will be filing tonight. We couldn't even connect. called their "internet desk" got told. As long as you can connect ANYTIME during the day, they have met their term of service. Then called their "Customer Relations" got the same story and were told that they couldn't tell us anything about upgrades to their service as the plans for NEXT YEAR have not been finalized yet. Same time they ARE RUNNING COMMERCIAL ABOUT THEIR WONDERFUL SERVICE. These people can't spell customer service let alone provide it. So I'm making it my mission to make sure they know that someone out here will be doing all they can to counteract their propaganda.
