Community efforts to eradicate Albizia?
#1
The Albizia are starting to bloom again.
I live in a subdivision where so far a few people have girdled or poisoned Albizia on their own and neighboring lots, but there is no community effort yet.
I am curious, are here any people on the PW who are involved with community efforts to eradicate Albizia? If so, is this done with the help of the Big Island Invasive Species Comity, do enough volunteers join the effort and is it having an impact on the problem?

We are beginning to see positive impacts in some parts of HPP, believe it or not. There have been signs on the main roads promoting albizia control workshops, so that could account for it. You might want to call the HPP office next week and see who was conducting the meetings. 966-4500

Simple home remedy - Can be done with any tree .
First girdle the tree to within 6 inches of the base of said tree.
Then cut into 6 inch lengths - 3/4 inch diameter copper pipe .
Take each piece of copper pipe and hammer into said tree below the girdle .On large tree's maybe 5 pieces of cut copper pipe,on smaller tree's 3 to 4 pieces of copper pipe.
In less than one months time, entire tree is dead dead dead forever. No need poisons .

Much simpler to just use Milestone. Use a cordless drill, drill a couple 1/4" or 3/8" holes into tree, put 1 to 2 ML's (which isn't much) into the hole. One to two weeks - dead trees.

I recently saw an albizia-infested acre lot in HPP for sale for $16,500. Could be a quick flip for someone with Milestone.

Kill any huge albizia with pocket change worth of Milestone. No need to make this difficult. Smaller trees can be killed with 2-3 drops of it.

Somebody still needs to deal with the dead tree/falling branches. We have one on the neighbor's side of our common border. I'm afraid to even walk over there if there is a breeze and I've been picking up debris for at least a year now. All that said, I'm still happy the tree is dead.

Looks like HELCO is starting to cut albizia away from the power lines. There are a lot of stretches where the lot is private and the albizia is off the easement but the trunks and branches are extending over power lines. There are more lots being cleared but usually left to grow back with the junk vegetation. More people are spiking, you can see dead albizia in the distance all over. That is one thing everybody is agreeing on, get rid of albizia.
