Hmmm, I wonder......
What happens when you spike a tree and it drops a huge limb on your neighbor's house or car or fence?
Most insurance companies I've dealt with say that a falling tree is an act of god, meaning... That you better have your own insurance. But the rule to this is, unless you can prove that the tree should have been cut down or was a rotting or diseased. Anyway... What happens when you intentionally kill a tree, I'm thinking in an insurance claim it's no longer an act of god and now, the home owner / lot owner next door is on the hook.
There was a HUGE albizia tree here in Hawaii beaches that someone spiked about 3 years ago. It's been dead for three years and just the other day I heard a huge ripping sound... I don't know if it was this dead tree or some other tree, but I suspect it was. These trees take a LONG time to die after injections, sure they will lose all the foliage and in same cases will start to regrow, time for another dose. But, just be aware, that the process is not over night. I suspect that some very big ones could take up to 5 years before finally imploding on itself.
I sm guessing FARM SUPPLY COOPERATIVE, INC. carries milestone?

The copper pipe method kills the entire tree within a month, rubber tree's any kind of tree and is not a harsh herbicide such as Milestone is .
Of course killing of any tree or the removal of said tree's should never be done if near another home or property .This is a simple home remedy for on ones own property where no others would be harmed should it fall power lines, neighbors homes or a road way.

The copper does not kill the tree, the girdling does. That's the appeal of Milestone, not much effort is required.
I hope as many albizias as possible are killed before the next big storm comes. That was a mess in HPP last year!

Any woody stemmed plant can be killed with a simple girdle near the base that penetrates deeper than the cambium layer. Exercise caution in killing and leaving standing because albizia get very brittle and dangerous to climb when left standing dead. Some arborists refuse to take them out top down without the use of a boom bucket.
Please don't ever spike a tree with copper or any other metal or ceramic. Someday someone is going to have to deal with it with a chain saw and perhaps a stump grinder. Spikes destroy equipment and cause injuries to operators all the time.
Best bet is to take out the smaller ones as near to the ground as practical as soon as they appear. Knock the big ones over if there's room, and hire a climber if there isn't. Stump spray with a product like Garlon 4.

If you kill a tree with Milestone, no one would ever know unless you told them or they saw you do it. All you need is a couple small holes drilled into it...Looks like a carpenter bee drilled a hole.

when the albizia dies it won't drop large limbs nor topple all in one go. They tend to dry out and drop in small pieces. Also, when they do dry out, they are about as light as balsa wood. Even when one is fresh cut and on the ground, it is easy to pick up a limb that is 8' long and about 8-10" in diameter due to the lightness of the wood. I have killed out many albizia and watched them die.. they just break down where they stand. The bigger the chunk, the closer to the base of the tree it falls.

The common characteristic of albizia is their branches and trunks fall down, regardless if they are spiked or not. Spiked trees tend to have all their leaves fall off first, which reduces the weight of a falling branch plus doesn't catch the wind to break it off. The spiked tree branches almost crumble apart and it takes big winds to start breaking off the larger branches. Most people are spiking in vacant lots so there is nothing for them to fall on. During a large storm a few months ago, watched two full trees get pulled out by their roots and fall down, while some spiked ones nearby only lost more branches.
The history of albizia in Hawaii is a strange one. It was introduced as a method of soil retention, yet the highest concentrations are in Puna, where there is hardly any soil. It was also done for reforestation and as a source of lumber. It shows that just because some idea seems organic doesn't automatically make it good for Hawaii. The other lesson is just because it works on some mainland somewhere doesn't mean it will work the same in Hawaii. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I too hope that people get active on it. Not what they are blooming again maybe people notice them more and remember what happened during Iselle in quite some subdivisions.
