Google "keaau pahoa road project" and the first link is keaau-pahoa.com, followed by the hawaiicountycdp.info site, then this:

Speculating further from the DOT's last published 2010 plan, State has to acquire these TMKs -- the asterisk indicates those with assessed structures:

There was a story on Hawaii Public Radio a few months ago about the backlog of federal funds on state highway projects in Hawaii. The feds had said if Hawaii DOT didn't get moving on some of their projects they would rescind the funding. As kalakoa pointed out, it's difficult to find a firm date for any particular project, but perhaps this is the state starting to speed up the highway construction process?

Is the old website for the KPAG or Keeau Pahoa Advisory Group.That info is all pretty much outdated.

I believe it also involves building new roads at the back of these lots and removing the present driveways that intersect Highway 130.That's why it is projected to take 10 years to build.!!

PCDP stipulates that there be no direct access to the highway, everything has to be on a side road, despite these driveways having existed prior to the PCDP.

It's really too bad the original developers weren't required to leave more buffer space for the future; the resulting problems won't be solved in our lifetime.

You know, there are a lot of you old geezers that were there all along with this project from about 2002, and this wouldn't be the first time, you completely forgot what you participated in. This road work took a lot of local people participating, and supposedly the representatives, over time. Yes, that map may also be old but it describes the work that has been done, plus shows full extent by mileposts. Again, the project is very simple-minded so you can understand: two full lanes from Pahoa to Hilo, shoulder expansion from Hilo to Pahoa. There are other pages with the stop lights, starting with the one at Shower and all the way down the road to Pahoa. You may wallow in your drunken addiction to nostalgia and remember when you could once sail through from Pahoa to Hilo.

The shoulder lane is temporary and the final design as shown in the link above has 2 12 ft lanes in both directions along with bike lanes.A lot of people are going to be unhappy that they will only be able to turn right and travel south.

Especially if the intersections don't allow U-turns... a careful review of the plans suggest that subdivision residents who lose their highway access to a cul-de-sac or right-in-right-out configuration will be able to travel through their subdivisions to a full highway intersection.

These are the same 2010 drawings that I've been referring to, but overlaid on satellite imagery so that it's obvious which TMKs will suddenly have the highway outside their front door. Even funnier, houses have been built since then, DOT didn't bother to buy the lots while they were still empty...

Fortunately for County, this is a State project, so the rules about "cannot improve private road" are magically superseded.

Unfortunately for residents of these "private" roads, they're about to be made into a bypass route, with all the traffic that implies.

This project passes through lots of front yards, so it only takes a couple of landowners forcing eminent domain to drag the project out beyond our lifetimes.

Interesting the above reasons to justify is this....
