Sure [i]seems like[i] 20 years...

you are right i have been here 41 years , seems like only 20
i have heard that there is a proposed homeless shelter/community in the planning stages for upper hawaiian acres ,road one . according to the county it will have to go through planning commission for approval . this will be interesting.

good grief.. so there isn't enough crime here? no bus service, no grocery, no health services. why in the world would they chose the acres? according to stats 38% homeless are addicted to either alcohol or drugs and 25% have severe mental health issues.. sounds like some NIMBYs in hilo want them out of view of the tourists...[Sad]

For every gentrification, there must be an equal (but opposite) ghetto.

The real fun will happen later, when Puna is gentrified, and "those people" have to move to Kau.

Then "those people" to be thrown into Pacific after Kau?
Just wondering about where this process is going.

a homeless encampment will create a mountain of problems. why hawaiian acres , my guess because it is cheap land out of sight , and away from the city.
everyday , everyday cops are at the park in hilo for one problem or another. the homeless are a growing population in hilo and it is becoming a big problem for the downtown area .

The homeless will probably find a way to migrate back to town so that they are close to the "services" they need. HA has no worries.

Community begins with Aloha

less rain more to do in hilo . i agree many will not go to hawaiian acres , but those with kids will stay if there is a shelter/cabin and services which is what the planned community program seems to be suggesting. wait and see i guess

lots in acres are 150 feet wide. sometimes even the best of neighbors can get loud, imagine 20 families within that distance of you, when most people came to the acres for a bit of quiet and privacy the acreage afforded... what about cesspool? drinking water etc. no, this should not make it through the planning dept...

hopefully it will not, but with the city /county having a problem with homeless in the downtown area and parks there is most likely a behind the scenes push to move this along, and " HACA" hawaiian acres community association is dysfunctional , it is going to take a strong lobby to oppose such a program. possibly even legal help.
