Tried to do a little research myself, but this is not an area of expertise for me. I gave you some help with astronomy and orbital debris, so hope you can return the favour.

I read that some ohias can reach roughly 50 inches in circumference at the trunk (that would be about 16 inches in diameter), but if an ohia tree really did have a 3-foot diameter, how high would it be?

Not sure if there's answer to that, but is there a general relationship between trunk size and tree height? If there is, does it depend on the species?

Up near volcano in the Pu'u Makaala forest reserve 4000 ft elevation there are old old growth Ohia's that are many hundreds of years old and some are larger than 3 feet in diameter. They do not keep growing taller, maybe 60' max height, just wider.

Also I woke up around 1AM and the SO2 smell was very strong. The http://hiso2index.info/ website showed green for Mtn. View and Hilo but that often is the case when my nose and blue tinged air says otherwise. Live in OCLA.

Hi Tom, Ohias don't grow much past 80 ft tall. The morpohology is highly variable there is some degree of relationship between height and circumference but not a static ratio. If it had a three foot diameter I doubt it would be around 80 ft probably more around 60 or less.

I would believe there are exceptions, when I worked up at the national park I never saw an Ohia with a 3 ft diameter nor heard of such a thing anywhere on the island.

Couple of months ago I was looking at a couple of Ohia fitting that description on a friend's property up at the top of Wright Rd in Volcano. They were tall, but not proportionally taller considering their massive girth.

Today near L ong's smelled a bit as well, but not as bad as times in the past.
Unless the smell is very strong, this my last comment , meaning not to worry that I will
post something every time I smell hydrogen sulfide .

Drove past the geothermal place on the way to town and no smell. Went through town, small smell. Drove back home past geothermal again and no smell!

Must be the giant rift zone with its many pukas that is causing todays odor.
