PGV Smelly this AM.

PGV doesn't own the power lines. HELCO does. So even if the county was poisoning albizia

If you're going to pick nits, go all the way. HELCO lines travel over a "utility easement", the land underneath which still belongs to someone and might also be part of a "road easement". Most likely, County is maintaining the road easement, which just happens to contain HELCO's utility easement, and in any case the preventative maintenance is still cheaper than post-storm cleanup.

Makes perfect sense to me.

The opposition to this "smell" seems to have some ulterior motive to it other than civic-mindedness. Any ideas what sorts of motives are percolating at the bottom of this Odor issue?

BTW,try living anywhere near a pulp-plant in the South for fragrant aromas that linger ad infinitum.

This has always been true -- as noted, PGV might smell, but then so does the active volcano, the albizzia bloom, the rotting pig carcass dumped on the roadside, etc.

Once upon a time I lived near an ethanol production facility. When the wind blew the "wrong" way, the stink was everywhere. Oddly enough, the folks who worked at the plant didn't think there was anything wrong -- possibly because they were busy working and drawing a paycheck.

Sugarloaf, good morning and more importantly welcome to the Punaweb.

Living next to a geothermal power plant is not something new for some of us, including my entire family from here. Being close neighbors with this geothermal plant has helped form the feelings we carry about the plant, or industry today. We know if we lived in a condo on Maui, or In Waikiki, our feelings may be entirely different about this geothermal production. Our quality of life may be entirely different as well?.
Unfortunately we were living here when several or all of the many geothermal plant mishaps and accidents have occurred. Some of these accidents were very frightening to have to live through as kids (1991 blowout) for example. You could sense the fear or concern from everyone involved, including your parents. Yes accidents can and do happen all the time within a mile of your home, usually not by geothermal power plants though. Blow outs like these can have lasting effects, nightmares, change quality of lives, and can leave uncertainties or questions for some time.

Without getting into it to much let me just say, I appreciate your opinion (sugarloaf) on the foul smells we continue to live with here. To help answer your question though about possible alternative motives? We have no real hidden motives against the cause of these oders, anymore than enough is enough with the human ginnie pig treatment from geothermal. The facts that we live with no help offered after these accidents, comparison environmental data, or health studies provided to calm or answer legitimate community concerns is troublesome. Mahalo for caring or lending enough time to allow my rant or opinion on this forum.

P.S. The Smell this time most likely was the Albezia blooming flowers, AND not THIS again: http://www.osti.gov/geothermal/biblio/882452

Aloha.

I have friends who live directly adjacent to PGV and, because of the constant complaints here on PW, I have asked them several times about the conditions as a PGV neighbor. They tell me they have no problems, no complaints. So I am kind of skeptical of complains from Leilani and elsewhere.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Mahalo Mr Tucker. That's wonderful news about your friends experience and lack of problems living adjacent from the geothermal plant. Our experience living next to geothermal has caused us to evacuate our homes, question untimely passing of friends and family, and worry about our children's futures. My wife's father was rushed to the hospital due to yet another blowout scare from the geothermal plant on the night hurricane iselle arrived. He has unfortunately not gotten better or been able to come home since. It may take some time for our feelings or opinions on geothermal operations to change? Sometimes we are sorry to share them thank you.

But you don't live close by you live in Leilani.

How has the geothermal plant ever caused you to evacuate your home? You can choose to attribute anything you want to geothermal but that doesn't mean it had any relationship outside of your mind. If you prefer to live in irrational fear its your choice, but you could try to realize that fear induced streas has actually been shown to cause negative health effects whereas living next the geothermal plant has not.

Why would a 'blowout scare' (whatever that is) cause your wifes father to be rushed to the hospital. What did they say at the hospital? What did they find was the problem?

Your anecdotes are not remotely convincing a comparison would be me trying to convince you I used to live on Mars with no evidence but my word alone.

Why did you end the second to last sentence with a "?" ? Do you know what ?s are for? Was that a question or a statement?

You should be sorry to share them because fear-mongering is a shameful and deplorable pasttime. As such you represent the lowest of the low of our population. Using fear to motivate others to follow your belief is the hallmark of an ideologue and clearly illustrates the validity of your claims. Those that speak truthfully don't need to use fear as a motivator.

Hate the messenger rainyjim. My personal opinion from experiences, doesn't need any more validation than the hearsay statements made from others. Leilani is a couple hundred feet down wind from geothermals 400 acres, the blowout happened(fact). As children living on the lower streets of leilani we had our experiences with the releases from geothermal. We still have terrible memories of having to simply take the school bus to school.

Rainyjim you may know why the geothermal plant moved away from the volcano community, or out of what use to be a prestine beautiful Ohia rain forest? Well they stuck this community polluter, now Ormat owned geothermal power plant across the street from us as kids as an experiment. Now we have to live with the expansiions whether we like it or not. I know... why not just move away from where you are from? That would be easy for some, We had our names and home on the geothermal/county relocation list. They have now frozen that process so it may take a few more years than we had hoped to sell and move. The Lava threat has made other ways of selling increasingly difficult as well. These are all my experiences not hearsay rainyjim.

Man you really are clueless, and complaining about grammatical errors shows that you really have nothing meaningful to say .
You know that PGV had an uncontrolled blowout during Iselle , or will you somehow try to deny this as PGV did for over a month, until Senator Rudimen made tube about the truth of the event.
