Introduce yourself
#71
Dear Mella,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

It's great to have a Forum that specialized on the East Side.

We will be living in or near Hilo in 2006 or 2007...our goal is 2006.

Looking to meeting people on Punaweb in the near future.

Sincerely,

Laura Kimmick

P.S. Welcome, everyone.

I'm glad we all get along so well here. This is a really great forum, especially when compared to that forum on the "other side", so much huhu, pilikia, and stink talk going on over there. It's kind of puzzling too, after all, this is paradise! Maybe it's too much sun? Wink Much Aloha to Punatics everywhere.

Just goes to show you why we all picked the Hil oside and Puna.... it's more warm here, more Hawaiian, more country and communal. Acceptance is the answer here.

We may not all agree or be doing the same thing, but there is no Sounthern-California style social competition here. It's part of what makes Puna paradise!!!

Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!
I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet
hit the floor each morning, the devil says

"Oh Crap, She's up!"

OK already! I’ll chime in as a new member so I don’t feel like I’m a hiding! Wink Some of you already have read my post on the Punaweb and maybe on the “other” web site. Just a re-cap here. Cathie and I moved to HPP on the 21st of September and hope to start building our home sometime in March. We came from Brookings Oregon and we just couldn’t stand the thought of going through another NW winter. The Punaweb is the BEST place to go for building information.

Mahalo,

Royall

No, I am not a new member, but I have been "off" for a while, spending more time on a "politically correct" forum even though I own more properties in Puna than on the West side of the island. I will try to be a contributing member here in the future.

Happy New Year Everyone! My name is Cathrine, and as of last week, my husband Doug and I are new homeowners in Fern Acres!

We lived on Oahu dare I say - 14 years ago, now. Doug was in the Marine Corps, and I had just gotten out of the Navy. We both fell head over heels in love with Hawaii. We made the rounds, visiting nearly all the islands, and found that BI was by far our favorite. Seems that we've been trying to get back ever since.

Turning 40 was the kicker for me this year. I started realizing that life was getting on, and we were still looking for a better place to live. We'd moved down to PA from NH to make the work commute easier on Doug, but with the influx of city folks after 9/11, we just had to get out of there. We checked out other places around the country - even took a trip to Florida and the coast of Texas. But nothing, nothing compared to our beloved Hawaii.

To make a long journey a bit shorter, let me say that things have begun to move very quickly for us now. I found that I could attend the acupuncture school up in Waimea (YAAA!), and we found a lovely home in FA that we could afford (in record time, I might add).

Now, I'll be returning to PA in a couple of weeks to begin the dreaded process of getting rid of our "stuff". I've got to get our house there on the market and get our kitties to the vet to start that little adventure. Our house should be finished being built in Feb, and I am expecting to be back out here sometime in March.

My poor, generous husband is making the supreme sacrifice of staying behind to continue working. Hopefully, not for long - just until the dust all settles and we get the bills figured out.

He is looking to change careers completely upon arriving HOME. He is thinking about becoming either a police officer or a teacher. I'm trying to encourage him to become a punaweb member so he can glean some information from some of the folks here.

I'm a nationally certified massage therapist back on the mainland, but I understand that that doesn't mean squat to the gov't here. So, I've got to connect with someone that can help me figure out what I need to do to qualify to take the HI test. I'll be pretty busy with school, but feel I should be able to do something else on the side - and I'd hate to let my massage abilities fall by the way in the face of buracracy. Did I spell that right? Oh well....

I'm so looking forward to getting back here! No more dreaming and pining - this is it! I can't wait to start planting - getting some chickens, some guineas, a koi pond (if I'm lucky!), starting up our honey biz again, all the good stuff we used to do on our NH farm - only warmer and better this time around!!! Mahalo to one and all!

Well Mella, you are very persuasive.

I, Fred, am a “lurker”… but I’ve only been lurking for a couple of days. (I feel like I am at an Al-Anon meeting) And, to confess further, (I am so very ashamed of this) I believe I am responsible for making my wife, Nora, a lurker also. Wow, I feel so much better now!

We live in Pittsburgh, PA, a place not exactly considered tropical. Our first visit to Hawaii was 15 years ago. It was a wonderful wedding present from my new in-laws. We did not return until ten years later, and we’ve been able to make regular visits each year since then.

Four years ago while waiting for an inter-island flight, we met an interesting fellow from Alaska. He told us that he had recently purchased a house in Puna. That got us thinking, “Why can’t we do that?” Unfortunately we were able to think of many reasons why. After approaching the problem from a number of different angles, we finally came up with a plan that we think will work for us. Consequently, during our next trip (a long 29 days from now), we will be looking to purchase a piece of land in paradise.

The experiences and information provided by this site and its members are invaluable.
(Now all we need is for all you Punatics to decide for us the type of house we should build, where we should build it, the size of the lot, when to build, select the contractors, etc., etc., etc…. SO MANY VARIABLES!!!)

Thank you all so much!

Fred (and Nora)
