homeless cabins on rd 1
#1
I just heard that the county has approved building 20 "cabins for the homeless" on a lot on Road 1 in Hawaiian Acres.

Anybody know more about this?

This would require an SUP, but there does not appear to be anything on either Planning or Council agendas.

Lee M S - Which lot on Rd 1 was this approved for?
Our nephew went to the last Road meeting, where the Pastor of the church was asking approval from Rd board and get community input as the church had not bought the lots yet ( 2 side by side lots of 1.8 acres each ).
We think what you may of heard is not fact and may be coconut wireless hearsay.
We do hope you are mistaken since these are ag lots and not residential lots of such magnitude .
While we are not opposed or in favor of such a grand vision of relocating Oahu's homeless population to H.A. ,the infrastructure as in roads, water and sewer are just not suited for such a large scale homeless encampment such as this.
Maybe Kau or up Hamakua side would be a much better area for such a large scale homeless encampment with 20 + structures.

From my time here in Hamakua, I could tell you it'd have a snowball's chance in H E double hockey sticks of getting approval here.

Hockey Stick #1 - Million $ home owners
Hockey Stick #2 - Mauna Kea's northern flank protectors

NOTE: the person who told me about the cabins stated it as a fact. Although she's very honest, she sometimes gets the wrong end of the stick, and I asked here to find out if it's true, or what part of it might be true.

Ted: Rehabilitating? Uh, really? I think they're more likely to starve or turn to crime if dumped far from any resources. Miles away from grocery stores, cafes, public transit.

It would be like abandoning your dog in the woods. He'll hunt to survive, right?

no biggy, there are work trade eco-villages all over Puna... same basic thing

but why HA? the bus only goes in to the entrance... thats alot of rural mudpuddle jumping and truck/pitbull dodging to get to most of the Acres beyond the entrance ....all this w/15 feet of rain/yr.

must be very near to Rd 1 and SoKulani to work IMO, any farther and you will have alot of stuck people far from everything, even bus

The irony being: those same lots have a much higher valuation due to the pavement.

lee i went to the pahoa meeting last nite and asked this very question. it is being researched and when i get an answer i will post it. the pastor from oahu stated it as fact at the road meeting, had the plans etc. and the owner of the property said the county had approved it. but neither of the puna councilmen knew anything about it.. so i would say it hasn't gotten far yet. i know i would be in there yelling like a banshee. no services in the acres, our roads are in disrepair and the police presence is limited as it is everywhere. the police gave a nice report last nite also, just so much crime going on right now...
