people just get desensitized from a constantly inflated level of heightened anxiety.

That would be exactly the point. Boring news doesn't sell. Later, we wonder why people suddenly snap.

Check out the waves at Pohoiki...quite impressive!

The popular Pohoiki surf spot in Puna was crowded this afternoon as high surf rolled in from Hurricane Ignacio.

Although the threat posed by Ignacio is diminishing as it tracks away from Hawaii Island, the hurricane did manage to kick up the ocean en route. The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Warning for East Hawaii, which has been extended until 6 am Wednesday. Wave heights 12 to 18 feet high are expected.

I'm too tired this morning to be impressed, maybe later if I can catch a nap. The big waves on the east shore rattled me awake at least a dozen times last night, no doubt amplified as they vibrated their way up to the second floor. It felt like a swarm of 4.0 earthquakes.

But... I'll say it again... waaay preferable to 90 mph winds and torrential rains.

It looks like Jimena is still on track to head far north of the islands, so that's good news.

How have the high surf conditions affect Waio'pae?

Waiopae Road under water from just past Kapoho Kai Drive to Kaheka Rd.

A little more than a king tide height because of the surge but not as bad as thought it would be!

A barrage of mighty close lightning strikes up mauka right now. The kind where the thunder booming a split second later actually shakes the old wood plank floor.
