Aloha to my new neighbors! My wife and I have recently moved to HPP from the hurricane state of Florida. After 23 years in Florida and making it through 2 major wild fires and 4 hurricanes,we thought we'd try living on the beautiful island of Hawaii. We've been sitting on the sidelines reading about the Puna area on this great forum. We've been impressed with the great ideas and mix of people. We are so very happy to have decided to make this our home.
We especially have enjoyed reading Pam's journal...a very interesting story. We just got our building permit and will be under construction by February. We will be doing it as an owner/builder and have gained alot of knowledge from the other owner/builderson this forum.Hope to meet some of you all in person. We'll be building on 30th off of Makuu.

Hello EveryoneSmile
I'm Anna and I'm a Puna-holic - LOL - bad joke; couldn't resist.
We live in Hawaiian Acres - we being Randy and I - and about 9-10 wild pigs. The local pig hunters have "hung out" here the past two evenings in hopes to spot them...maybe tomorrow; they're tearing up the yard!! (the pigs, not the huntersSmile

We love our place - 3 acres, great house, great 100 tree orchard on adjacent 3 acres. That's why the pigs love it here too! We don't own - we are renting long term, for now.

Being from the midwest - SW Ohio to be exact - the housing market is much more modest than California or Hawaii. My 1/2 acre, 4 bedroom 1 1/2 bath brick ranch with full basement, and certified backyard wildlife habitat sold for a whopping $160,000.00 in May of 2004 - hardly enough profit to buy a place here. But the kids are grown and I'm having the time of my life!!

Our friend owns a large (and growing) coffee farm in Holualoa above Keauhou on the west side and I work for her as a business/marketing consultant. I put together a darn good business plan and 3 year forecast to help her expand and am helping her implement the marketing plan we put together to sell her estate grown roast. (enough mention of work!)

To wake up each morning to birdsong and rainbows is the best! (and preferable to the snow, cold and pollution of SW OhioSmile

Way to go Nora and Fred - looks like the Steelers crushed the Bengals in Sunday's play-off game. Ouch! Of course, we don't have cable TV here in this part of Hawaiian Acres and satellite TV isn't feasible with the cloud interference so we didn't watch the game but man, did we ever hear about it from family and friends back in SW OhioSmile Congrats to you!

I look forward to getting to know you all better. I suffered with a pinched sciatic nerve when we first moved here which took about 6 weeks to heal (I overdid it during the move). So we've been slow to meet people but are finally getting out and making new friends. I hope to see you all around PunaSmile

Peace - Anna

Boy is this great or what. More new neighbors to welcome! LOL, we're not there yet, getting there as fast as we can,
but thrilled to read there are other adventurers with feet on terra firma, with the trades in their hair, and Anna's bird song and rainbows!

So hallo to taildrag, and to Anna and family. Pretty soon those of us on island will need to have a meet your neighbors party for the Punatics who enjoy the Punaweb so much. A monthly or semi monthly to do, where we can all meet Rob and Pam, and so many others who have offered encouragement, advise, food for thought, and we can express our gratitude. There must be enough of you there now to get this launched!!!

Yes taildrag, each place we live, or come from has it's challenges and as we all know or read Florida has been particularly hard hit of late. Perhaps life on a living volcano will be more predictable. If not we can enjoy watching the earth recreate itself and hope for the best.

In Northern California we live in fire and earthquake country, and our neighborhood has been quarantined twice for fire the past two years. Some people moving here do not have the experience living a rural life, do not understand the dangers and heed the precautions about fire. The learning curve is very steep. Hopefully when we relocate to the BI we will have some of the knowledge to be an asset to our new home and neighborhood.

Anna you mentioned SW Ohio being a more modest market than California. Well unfortunately all of CA is not in the hot market area. Here in No Ca the market is very modest, and does not compare with areas like Malibu, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and such that people read about. So when you meet with contractors and they hear CA they see $ signs. Wish it were so.

So modest in Paradise is hands down better than grandiose, or even middelen in over crowded and hurried metro, that's what we are hoping.

Good luck with the pigs. A friend who has lived on and off the island since the early 70's tells of taking a good sized metal barrel, tilting it at an angle and leaning it on a wood frame, putting some pig treats in it. The pig walks up the wooden ramp smells the goodies in the large barrel and walks in for the treats. Well the can then tips up and you have caught yourself a pig. Then some one needs to do the deed. Locals claim this is better than chasing them around per my friend. Then there is the neighborhood BBQ, and Mai Tai's!

Good luck and Aloha, Mella L

I am Lew my wife is Sue. We live in Portland, Oregon. I am retiring in April, after many year working for state agencies. I am going to be on the Island in April, to see if I can buy a house. My wife is not ready to retire and does not want to close her insurance agency here yet, so we will have a place here also for the time being. I think the Puna rain is more tolerable than the steady, cold Portland rain. Is it true that most of the Puna rain comes down very heavy, then quits and the sun comes out, that was what I noticed when I was there in December, but I don't know if it always so. I don't think Puna has heavy VOG like Kona either, so that and the expensive Kona real estate, makes Puna look quite qood. I liked reading the, 3rd edition of Affordable Paradise, his comments about "living aloha", were well taken.
You have a great, informative site.

We'll be looking for a rental and all the advice we can get!
We're going to be in HPP from Feb 1 til 10th. Hope we can meet some of the folks from this site. (I've been "lurking" here for awhile)

It was probably a good thing that you could not watch the game last weekend. As you probably know by now, early in the game, ex-Bengal and Molokai native, Kimo von Oelhoffen knocked Carson Palmer out of the game. Carson would have been tough to beat. But look at it this way - you live in Hawaii. Today we experienced temps in the 20s and wind gusts to 45 mph. But in 18 long days we are there! Hopefully we can meet some of the "Punaweb" gang at the "Official First Punatic Party" on 2/11.

Yokwe - from the Marshall Islands.
We are Jim and Carol and we work at the RONALD REAGAN MISSLE DEFENSE TEST SITE on Kwajalein Atoll. Carol is Harbor Master and I am a Marine Electrician working on both ship and dockside facilities.
We have been investing some of our retirement money in Puna Property and now own sites in Nanawale, Tiki Gardens, and Pacific Paradise Development Subdivision.
I will be retiring in next few months and will move, probably, to the Nanawale subdivision on Hilo Street.
My son has done some hand clearing and put in a 300 square foot deck and a 250 square foot cabin on the Tiki Garden property. It has building permits OK'd and temporary electric service installed.
We also have our building permits for the Nanawale lot.
We have been using ARGUS BUILDING SUPPLY to handle everything. GREAT FOLKS - THEY GET IT DONE.
I look forward to getting started building around May. Carol will follow me over a few months later - she'll work at Kwaj a little longer so she can buy all new appliances, etc.
We really enjoy this forum and have learned much from it. Hope we can help others as well.
If anyone needs electrical help, I'll be available even though I will probably not get licensed so I can not sign off on projects. Maybe I can work with a licensed electrican. OH, WELL, we'll figure that our when we get there. - Jim & Carol

Moving to Puna (Nanawale) from Kwajalien, R.M.I. Looking forward to arriving there in May, 2006.

Just wanted to say welcome to the new forum peoples! What a talented and varied group we are becoming. Lew and Sue, Ron and Connie, and Jim and Carol. New arrivals Lew and Sue will be able to compare rain levels, as Sue stays behind for a bit in ever green Oregon, Ron and Connie have the Albezia solution and will perhaps share with us!! LOL and Jim can shop prices in Kona Loews for appliances as Plamont has recently scooped out the inventory there as ono. Just wanted to say Aloha to you all and good adventures on your Puna relocations!!
