Seems like a waste of money, paper, postage to send them to everybody
County doesn't work with state to synchronize tax return info. If local agencies interacted, and could coordinate and fast track their efforts, DOH might have included a Dengue Fever Info Bulletin in the envelope so it wouldn't be a complete waste of a stamp.

waste of money, paper, postage to send them to everybody instead of just the ones that didn't file income taxes
State has no incentive to save money for County; the adversarial relationship is completely unnecessary, but here we are.

Wasn't there a big rant on Punaweb about Tiffany taking the homeowners exemption at the wrong house ?
This is the answer to that problem. Your address that you are using to file your income tax, has to match the address where you are claiming an exemption.

Unless your tax return is sent to a P.O. Box or HCR Box.

The mailing address has to match.
They are trying to catch out of state offenders and weed out the people in Hawaii who are getting the benefit of a deceased relative .

A local resident could have homes in Keaau, & Hilo, & P.O Boxes in each town.
They could live in Keaau, rent out a much larger home in Hilo, use a Hilo P.O. Box to file their tax return and claim the Hilo house as their residence for the largest real estate homeowners exemption.

I thought SSNs were being used to compare property tax and HI state tax returns. Am I wrong? I have two mailing addresses (neither of which are my physical address), and my state tax returns use one, property tax uses the other. Never had any issues.

quote: For federal taxes you have a form from the lender that shows the interest you paid for a specific address, most things on state tax forms are based on your federal return, so wouldn't you need to have all 3 documents match up if you are claiming the home owner's rate for property taxes and the homeowners exemption for federal taxes? Claiming one home on your federal and a different home on your state taxes seems like a recipe for an audit from someone. I do wonder how Hawaii will handle people who file federal and state extensions on their taxes though. |
