Security issues/site added!!
#1
Aloha All,

Recently on the Konaweb and on the Fern Acres Association web site there have been issues of security.

The following web site shows a solar set up for security outdoor lighting with a siren that can be on or off according to your wishes.

Do others have other ideas about security? I don't like the thought of someone coming into my home with ill intent and I'm inside and unaware of the intrusion. (not that our place will be large)

What do you plan to do?

Many thanks Mella L

Oh if it is to sensitive to put on line feel free to email me if you want to share? Mahalo

Mella, a big dog works wonders! The dog doesn't need to be mean (in fact a mean dog is probably the wrong way to go).

Good Luck!

I have 2 loud dogs, a closed (not locked) gate, and my house is out of sight of the road, never been ripped off. I didn't even keep the gate closed until a mentally ill woman started coming around asking for rides to Kona (she's long gone, poor t'ing), and some kid on acid showed up asking if my driveway was the road to "Pomona". That was a few years back, since then, no problems at all.

unfortunately its also happening at new construction sites or vacation homes around my area....its always good to ask your neighbors to keep their eyes peeled and have any materials exposed, taken out of public viewing from the road.....i've been hearing about people driving around and looking for vacant homes or homes for sale so that's very difficult to control unless you have someone checking in on the property for you every now and then.

another thing i try to do is have a gate/fence area in the front to make it difficult to get to the home and have tree's/shrubs in the front to maybe hide the home so driveby people can't see whats laying around the home for easy pickings

sometimes just having a chain link blocking the front driveway is enough to deter any lazy people from trying to enter a home/vacant property.

Also have lights on the property at night time including sensor lights

I have had some items stolen out of my shed last year. My place sits empty for about 6 months at a time, in HA. So far they have not broken into the house. On my last trip out I installed some outside motion sensor lights, hopefully this helps.

I've seen gate chains and motion detector lights stolen. Remote sites, or of visual contact with neighbors are attractive targets.

I think it is realistic to discuss these thngs and not try to ignore or hide the fact that there are thieves in the jungles.

The best defense during construction is to have someone on site - camping in the shell or tent or trailer. People sometimes pay someone to camp on site.

The best defense when occupied is a clear line of site to a friendly neighbor and the next best is an unchained dog. Having a free roaming dog on your property would require fencing. The dog does not need to be a pit bull.

Thank you all.

We are planning on a gate and a driveway into our parcel. How far from the road edge should the gate be. We would need enough to get a car or truck off the road, but not so far that a thief could park there unobserved while picking the gate lock. So what would be a good distance.

LOL!! NO Pit bulls for me either, I've read too many sad stories from the mainland! A yappy little terrier maybe, or a chahouahoua!!

I suggest that your gate be off the road far enough to park and open it without impeding the traffic lane.

Also I suggest that the gate post locations be planned to allow room for container delivery or cement trucks to make a wide turn into your driveway.

I've seen poorly placed gates get torn out by large trucks - not the truck driver's fault. Bad gateway design.

Motion sensing lights you can find them everywhere and some that are solar powered so they can be located where you choose.

Here is a nifty little devise for cheap money GOTO

HADave Smile) For this kind of money you can see all the pieces needed for a more elborate design and find a local supplier to sell you the pieces needed........
