Crash on 130 about 5:15
#1
Surprised not to see anything posted here about the crash just north of Shower this evening. White pickup on its side and a motorcycle on the ground. We were headed into Hilo and passed it of course too late to turn back. Took an hour and a half to get back home.
So much for a quick trip into town!

So this was at the new "better" merge they put in?

One road in ... one road out ... and we're lucky to have that much.

Actually, the traffic situation is way better than I thought it was going to be after the new construction. This mess yesterday was due to a bad accident. I read there were three cars and a motorcycle involved. I've driven home from Hilo a number of times in late afternoon and the traffic has always been way better than before. I think your statement is not fair.

I agree. The accident yesterday was an exception to the usual traffic flow. I thought the new merge would simply move the traffic jam a few miles down the road, but that has not been my experience at all.

At the old merge I would regularly wait 5 - 30 minutes in the afternoon to get through the merge. Now I never do. It was the traffic light in close proximity to the merge at the old location that clearly created the problem. Let's hope when the DOT installs the Shower Drive stoplight, they switch it to flashing green on the highway from 3-6 PM, and flashing red on Shower/Pohaku from 3-6 PM.

I was not referring to the speed with which we all get home now, but the crazy driving that occurs when two lanes merge into one just feet before half of that lane needs to get into the left hand turn lane at Shower, while everyone is driving 55 instead of coming from a stop as it happened in the old merge. I have had several close calls caused by people blasting up the right lane and then forcing their way into the left lane at 55 miles an hour. I have also seen multiple accidents caused by that same thing. So my commute is way faster, and now more dangerous.

They do this other places too. It's called "don't know how to merge", otherwise known as "driving with a hole-in-the-donkey" (to put it very very politely).

Odds are the cup will runneth over, and 130 will become a four lane dead end road, in which case the county will turn it into a drag-strip. Motorbikes and pickups will be in different classes. I'm going to put a semi engine in the back of mine... just the beginning... ;-)

I think they know how to merge. They've just watched everyone else do it as they blasted past them. They're willing to take advantage of a situation so they can reach their destination several seconds earlier because... they're couriers for Clinical Laboratories - Hawaii? Aunties insulin ran out?

Even pizza delivery guys on a 30 minute deadline don't resort to those tactics.

First in line at the red light -- or in this case, Roundabout Detour Road Temporary Signal.
