until "seasonal" layoff
Seasons are very different here, which does not fit the "big-box standard process", but so far they haven't caught on.
It's nice to get bargains during the "clearance before season X" ... but I'd rather have everything all the time, instead of the "oh, you don't have that? because your manual says it's 'winter' now?"

I was referring to what they call it, but instead it is keeping an employee under 999 hours a year, assuring part time status.

I might go to a local Costco, but travelling to Kona doesn't work for me.

Latest urge to enroll/drive to Kona for solar batteries, deemed uneconomical, as figured thusly:
1) Although Costco was reputed to stock 6v 232AH batteries @$100, neither the website nor abortive attempts to talk to Kona personnel could confirm
2) Local source@$150 x4 = $600
3) 3 hours there, 3 back plus an hour in store, give myself min wage @$8/hr = $56
4) Two tanks of gas @30 ea = $60
5) Wear on vehicle, figure same as gas $60
6) Significant i.e. +%20 that they don't have them. Wasted trip. $50
7) have to buy membership $55
=~400 + 281 = $681 to get in Kona, vs $600 here.
Local flavor of transaction, Priceless.
;-)

The upshot of the county ordinance to oppose a Sam's Club is that Costco now knows that the county will protect it from its main competitor and Walmart now knows that it is not welcome. Thus, imho, neither company will build a store on the Hilo side.

Funny thing: last I was at Costco (window-shopping while playing "Kona tourist") they didn't stock them, no value in the membership then...

FWIW, I've never had a problem calling Costco and finding out if they have something in stock. They've always been able to tell me the name/brand/model/description and exact number in inventory, generally in under a minute of me dialing the number.
I'm not sure the type of battery you are referring to, but the last few times I've been in that section, they did not have golf cart batteries where they used to- it looked like their selection of batteries in general was smaller.

One doesn't need a liberal website to tell you that Walmart pays their employees starvation wages. Just ask one....they will tell you!!

common sense will tell you there is not enough people on this island to support 2 Costcos... the company will prob say the same ... again
the materialistic Big Box Store sunburn side is perfect setting for a Costco... plan a trip once every 2-3 months to get some sun and stop by to get your 48 count case of Top Ramin, or case of Pork and Beans.... or giant box of Hot Pockets

Hawaii's Act 82 (2014 legislature) increased the state's minimum wage to $7.75 per hour beginning January 1, 2015 and to $8.50 per hour beginning January 1, 2016. Walmart workers pay will increase to $9 per hour in April 2015, and then to $10 per hour in February, 2016.
$10/hour in 2 months.... 40 hours a week... $400 gross, ca$1600 month ca$20,000+/yr is NOT starving wages...

And yet you have missed the whole point. Here, in Hawaii - they already make more than $10 and it isn't a starvation wage, especially if it is their first job! Why do you think so many here in Hilo, have been there for years? Why don't they quit if it is so terrible? Hmmmmm....
