Also, his next talk is at Seaview tomorrow morning if anyone is interested in attending. not sure as to the time.

Fabulous! I was very impressed with his presentation and if this has quelched dengue outbreaks in other countries hopefully we can get enough Big Island folk onboard to stop it here as well!

Just found out that a young friend of mine has been tested positive for dengue. His father had to take him back into the doctor and demand they test for dengue? What the f---, he should have been tested during the first visit. During the first visit the doctor told them he had strep and scarlet fever, then after requesting the dengue test he apparently was positive with the dengue too.

Another friend down around lava tree was just diagnosed with Lepto last week. He is lucky to be alive after his kidneys shut down during the second week of being very sick. Not sure how the doctors were so quick or sure he has lepto and not this dengue virus? We don't think he was even tested for dengue due to the quick lepto diagnosis. Why aren't sick folks being automatically tested for this dengue virus around the big island? Sure glad my friend brought his son back in to the doctor and made sure they tested for the dengue regardless of the previous diagnosis. The doctors in these parts don't seem to think its important to test for it unless you ask them too.

Gypsy69,

Have you considered that playing golf in an area known to have a dengue outbreak, letting yourself get bitten by several mosquitoes, admitting it, and then returning home to your family, neighbors and friends, may not be the most sensible decision you've ever made?

Thank you Major Tom, I have not played another round of golf since. My friends son was going to school for a week after the first doctor visit, then he tested positive for dengue at least a week later. They live at the bottom of Paradise park, they said two neighbors of theirs had the dengue before their son got it. They wish they had known about the dengue cases nextdoor to them before their son had got it. Now the whole family just bought plane tickets to move to the mainland for the next six months.

Would you mind adding a little more info? Like which cross streets are nearby, or between which cross streets?

Great question hotpe, they live on 12th and makuu. My friend and his son when healthy, work and play outdoors, mainly around the vacation rentals on the ocean side and kaloli point, mowing and up keeping vacation homes. They now believe their son contacted the dengue at home playing in the yard due to the next door neighbors case of dengue. Unfortunately not knowing it was dengue for the first week due to the first doctor visit, life went on as normal for them (work and school). Apparently their entire property has now been sprayed to kill off those mosquitoes.

gypsy,
I'm glad to hear they sprayed the area.
To bad it was too late for your friend's son. Hope they're OK.

Much appreciated hotpe.
Yes my friends son is starting to feel better, although his father needs to get tested now too. Apparently when you test positive with the dengue the state comes out and sprays your entire property every week for three weeks. Just talked to my friend an hour ago. He can't believe the difference with the AMOUNT of mosquitoes around his place now after the second spraying, almost non existent. He now is keeping the kids inside almost all the time in fear of other infectious mosquitoes and having a couple other children yet to be infected with the dengue virus.

Another article here from a mainland newspaper about the dengue fever outbreak in Hawaii.

Scary to think This dengue could be here for months, years, or permanently.

Word is getting out about our Dengue problem.

A Canadian couple I know have just canceled their two week trip to Hawaii in February because of the Dengue here.
I would bet they are not the only ones.

Last two posts are excellent reasons for everyone on the Big Island of Hawaii to step up to the plate and be responsible by setting out mosquito traps on their property or where they are renting. There's a link on this thread for instructions and more info on the successful traps from eviloctopus.

Let's do it, let's wipe this thing out before one more person has to suffer thru the horrendous symptoms.
