"I know your not suppose to put anything on the power poles, but... I believed the signs worked in a subliminal kind of way."
Reminds me of those small hand-painted "smile", "enjoy life" signs one can spot in seemingly random roadside locations scattered across Puna. I'm not really one for new-age type positive messaging, but I kinda like those signs.

Flashback public service message from the 70s. Incredibly poor taste in hindsight, but I think the commercials impacted the kids of the day in a good way.

Littering was commonplace when I was a child. This clip from "Madmen" nailed it.

In the 70s, cultural attitudes shifted massively regarding behaving like a pig and throwing crap out the window became taboo. Gives one hope for the human race.

I think "Men of Pa'a" work the road south of Makuu.

Thanks EightFingers. I'll try to join that crew when I get over there if they will have me.

My action is to ask people to secure their trash, and pick it up if it drops on the highway. When my kids were young I made them pickup their toys when they were done playing for the day. If I picked it up for them they never learned to be responsible, and learn consequences in life. I choose not to be an enabler for bad behavior. You can give a person fish, or you can teach them to fish.
