Anyone seen any whales?

I haven't seen any yet.

Do scientists know why they why whales begin their migration?
If it has anything to do with the water temperature in the ocean (which is warmer than normal this year), perhaps it's taking longer to reach a winter temperature range which signals it's time to leave Alaska and head for a Hawaii.

The waters around Hawaii are the mating and calving areas for humpbacks. They migrate back to their main feeding areas around Alaska with their weaned young. Warmer water off Alaska may be throwing off their timing on when to leave for Hawaii. On the mainland, over the past several years, Canadian geese stopped migrating south, determining the northern US states were all the further south they needed to go for the winter. They are a real nuisance around Washington.

We've had some around Vancouver Island lately, which is quite unusual for this time of year. Canada Geese have been wintering here in the Comox Valley ever since Ducks Unlimited bought the large farm on the estuary. I'll tell the whales they are expected in Hawaii next time I'm out kayaking (do you think they'd tow me?)
