The Superferry was a high speed catamaran that was built by Austral, an Australian company. While the reason is argued, the Hawaii Superferry went bankrupt with two ferries built. Eventually, the US Navy stepped in and saved a lot of investors butts by buying the ferries. They turned them into experimental high speed troop transports. The trials were viewed as successful and 12 were ordered from Austral. Now, the US Navy is finding the aluminum catamaran hulls don't hold up to extended ocean operations. The overhaul bills they are looking at, could have been Hawaii's if Superferry hadn't gone bankrupt. The Epilogue.

With the price of oil so low right now, it seems like the perfect opportunity build an inter-island highway system. Just raise a couple hundred billion dollar bond and finance it for 50 years and annualize the payments out as road fees to every resident of the State of Hawaii.

Good read thanks for the bloomberg link ...the hull repairs seem minor ...couple of million dollars each, figure half that if the private sector was ding the fix. ........The gensets a bad purchase - buying offshore while the US builds some of the best units in the world false economy. Maybe some one in procurement got their arm twisted.
Ive seen alaska diesel gensets and cats with over 20,000 hours still purring ...ok ....roaring along...Many WWII vintage detroit 2 strokes still in operation today. (at least until the epa finds them) Traveling between islands a necessity not a luxury ....imho If we can rationalise Hele On, why not a publically owned ferry? |
