Dengue state of emergency
#21
I was in Thailand when 250,000 people died in a single day. Dengue is nothing, more illness will result from the spraying.

"I was in Thailand when 250,000 people died in a single day."

That statement threw me off for a moment. Then I figured you must be referring to the catastrophic tsunami event of 2004.

I'm not so sure that is an appropriate measure by which to put the hazards of the Dengue virus into perspective.

Edit: 2005 corrected to 2004.

250,000 people didn't die in Thailand that day, what the heck are you on about.
About 150,000 people die every single day but what does that or a tsunami have to do with dengue? Spraying for dengue will kill more people? What??

Is it something in the water?

Data from http://www.tsunami2004.net/tsunami-2004-facts/

Total 2004 tsunami death toll from 14 countries was 230,000.

We've been using citronella bands as a deet alternative.
They work quite well, last 250 hours of wear (store them in zip bags to prolong life). I usually wear two at a time, wrist and ankle.

I bought some last summer, before the dengue outbreak, and they cost $10 for 10. Last month, they were down to $4 for 10. Now the best deal on Amazon is $20 for 50 of them. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NX1YX6K?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

edited to add ingredients: Geraniol Oil, Lemongrass Oil, and Citonella Oil

I started watching Vice on HBO last night, but I am feeling rotten with a cold I got from my grandaghter, so went to bed at 9:15 last night. My wife said the last 15 minutes mentioned a method other countries are using to fight this fever. Apparenty, genetically modified mosquitoes, that, when they mate with a mosquito with dengue, it kills that mosquito. Apparently, it is working pretty well. I'll catch it on demand later myself.

They tried that in Brazil in 2012 to kill the dengue, now three years later they have Zika. Zika is sexually transmitted between people and causes serious birth defects that leave you wishing you had died, jmo. Looking for alternatives cause I don't want dengue, I don't want GMO mosquitoes or zika here either.

GMO mosquitoes sound like a great idea.

From the news I saw it was over 90% effective compared to spraying insecticides broadly (30%).
Assume the best and ask questions.
