Home Energy Report
#1
Every month, some organization called HawaiiEnergy wastes paper sending me an energy audit.

It claims to compare my electric usage to 100 "occupied apartments or condos" in my area. I guess I'm doing pretty good, My 1200 sf house in Hawaiian Acres uses less energy than half my neighboring condos...

Does everybody get these things? Are they really comparing houses to apartments, or are they just Oahu-centric idiots who can't think to use the term "households"?

I don't really get where the hostility comes from without even bothering to look into it first.

Yeah, I've been getting the monthly reports in the mail for awhile now. I find it interesting and perhaps a little motivational to see how my usage stacks up compared to surrounding households (usage < 93% on latest report).

It is kind of a fraud because it is made to appear like it is coming from Hawaiian Electric. It isn't from Hawaiian Electric. It is from the PUC, or more accurately, from a Contractor for the PUC. And we rate payers are being charged for this "service", the cost of the contract added on to our bill.

With all the blame-game going around for the Hawaii electric situation, the PUC has been able to do the government sand crab routine, and skitter from rock shadow to rock shadow. This "newsletter" is a piece of crap and really shows how not to do statistical analysis. Their comparisons are meaningless garbage. Start feeding back to the PUC, rather than Hawaiian Electric or all the other groups profiteering from attacking Hawaiian Electric, that we don't need their stupid paper waste in the mail.

I look at his musings like the recipe included with our electric bill. This month, "Valentine Tomato Soup," with instructions to achieve a good head of foam by "using an immersion blender..." But that's as far as I'll get, glance at the recipe, and unless it's is wrong, I'll let it go at that.

Yep, just as well.

I'm almost always at the top of the list and I don't even have solar as a lot of my neighbors do. Our bills just don't make solar worthwhile.
I also wondered how much it cost to put this thing out.

Ted makes good points.
One of the annoying things about this is that it comes in a Helco envelope, so it looks like the bill.
Another is that HELCO is apparently sharing my information with another party.
If the "audit" is actually comparing my usage with my neighbors, then they're including people who are off-grid or have had their electricity turned off. That's just not helpful.
Plus, it's another piece of paper I have to deal with, and probably have to pay for as well.
I've got good reasons not to feel warm and fuzzy about this.
