Hey All,
My name is Katy. I am 19 years old, and my family (my parents and 4 younger siblings) moved here four and a half years ago. My parents bought 40 acres in Mt. View, which is quite a change from living 60 miles north of Pittsburgh, PA (GO STEELERS!!!!!). Our house is still under construction, but it is done enough that my family has moved in.
Look forward to meeting ppl at the party on Saturday!
Byez,
~Katy

We are also thinking about making the big move to the island. Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a realtor to get started with.

Aloha everyone,
My name is Keith and my family and myself are moving to the BI hopefully in April from Chicago. We are waiting for our house closing here before we can get out there. We are waiting till then in temps in the 30's and tommorow in the teens. Today rained all day with fog so thick you couldn't see down the street and tonight it will all freeze making for interesting driving in the morning. We could use some warm weather and sunshine. We haven't been out there since Sept. We have land in HPP and are going to be doing as much work as we can ourselves. I have been reading all of your guys messages and would like to thank all of you for the helpful information you have put up here. It almost feels like I know some of you. Any helpful information, tips, tricks and the such for building in Hawai'i that any of you could give us from your experinces that I haven't already learned would be great. Feel free to email me with anything you guys can.

Hi, I'm Carey, and I haven't really been a lurker, but have been on the forum for the other side (of the island) for the last 8 months, and came other to this side (forum) when I had a question that I wanted answered, and it was answered on this forum!
My husband, Jim, retired at the old age of 50 (he was given the choice, retire or just git). I had been a volunteer diver for the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago for years, and I finally wanted to pursue my dream of studying Marine Science. In researching good Marine Sci. universities, University of Hawaii was up there. As we were going to resettle from the western Chicago Suburban area, UH-Hilo kept getting high potentials, so the 1st week of May '05, we put our house on the market, had 4 offers that day, last week of May we closed on our Chicago house, June 1st Jim retired, June 14th arrived in Hilo (first time ever in Hawaii), one week later had a rental house off of Beach in HPP, started back to school in August, bought our house in Keaau town in November (close to buses & yet has a great small town feel), finals in December & have been working on repairing it since. Have met & forumed with some of you, & am meeting some anew.
Thats a quick intro, Aloha, Carey

I have made a few posts, so I should introduce myself. I am Allen and my wife is Wannipa (Thai). I grew up on an apple orchard in Washington, went to grad school at UC Davis and have been a honey bee geneticist with USDA, ARS in Baton Rouge, LA for the last 30 years. We bought 2 houses in HPP in 1990 and plant to move to the Big Island in 4-5 years when I retire. I am particularly interested in tropical fruits, orchids and bees. In preparation, I am trying to get rid of clutter (got a lot of that) and get up to speed on growing tropical fruits and living on the Big Island. I only get over to the Big Island every few years, last in 2000.

Brevity is not my strong suite, but I'll attempt it here. My husband Ralph and I have been visiting HI since we married in 1991; we knew all along that SOME day we would retire here. Fate and serendipity has fortunatly put us here about 20 years ahead of schedule.Hoo-raay! We bought an acre in Eden Roc and plan to build a very unique home consisting of three octagon shaped stru-ctures connected by 12x12 breezeways with a large lanai connecting everything as we plan to spend the majority of our time outside. He is full blooded German (originally from Villegin Schwarzwald) so he plans to do everything himself as only he can do it right. We met in Texas, where we were both raised. I asked him to watch my surfboard while I went to get something to drink at the Pt. Aransas pier and the rest is history. He is a welder in Hilo and I took an early out from Continental airlines(csa mostly gates as I loved it pre-9/11). I did keep my flt. privies as I'm crazy but not stupid! Currently I'm digging life in paradise anxious to get my new nest started and fineshed. Feeble words can never express how grateful I am to know this website exists as it will surely be of great help in the very near future...if we ever get our stamped plans!!! Ten months and counting.

Pam, are you building a Topsider home? I saw the exactly same floor plan at their factory in NC a while back.

No not a topsidder but along the same lines. We liked the topesider and the multi-facetted but heard less than glowing comments about how easily (or rather not) the kits go together once on site. We incorporated alot of others ideas to form our own plans. Even before reading the add You live on an island decorate accordingly, we knew our home would be tropical in design and feel and have little resemblence to our mainland homes. Pam3

Aloha ya'll!
My husband, Jeff, and I hope to move to the Big Island one day. We've gotten one step closer by buying our lot in HPP on 1st. Ever since we spent our honeymoon on Maui 18 years ago, we knew we wanted to live in Hawaii. We try to vacation every year at one of the Hawaiian islands and never feel truly at home until we are there.
The only thing holding us back is the unknown. Unless Jeff is able to get a transfer to one of the Post Offices near Hilo, it's probably going to be many years before we can make the move (we're keeping out fingers crossed that someone wants to leave paradise). I'm hoping there are plenty of legal secretary or bookkeeping jobs that pay at least $35,000, so that I might be able to snag one when the time comes.
We just have such a low cost of living in our area (Milton, Florida), that we worry it's going to be really hard to make ends meet in Hawaii.
We have two wonderful babies (one miniature Schnauzer and one poi dog).
Love the ocean, hiking, nature, photography and just being in the wonderful Hawaiian outdoors!
We also love living our dreams through all of you who have made your dreams reality. One day it will be our time.
Until then, ya'll keep writing, so we can keep dreaming!
