Me too, about an hour late, screwed my day up, why cant they make a temporary dirt road or tear out a little section to allow the traffic to be somewhat normal? time is money and they are taking their time from us,Poor Planning, whats another few thousand tax dollars to keep us moving along so we can do our business? unreal

Changed my mind yesterday, didn't go into town. Mahalo for the update!

Even this phase-in of the roundabout is Puna-fied. If you look, the outbound lane to Hilo, is virtually the same as before the roundabout. That is, traffic from Kalapana direction and coming up out of Kahakai are still mostly a straight shot in town, after the yield. The DOT didn't open this yet, when it should have been the first part of the phase-in. This outside lane was done before all the sphagetti work on the other lane. It would have meant all the people going into town from Kahakai and Kalapana direction wouldn't have to be going through the temporary light detour, which is causing the inbound traffic to wait for their passing to cycle through. Well, the DOT wan't to get Punatards trained about the actual roundabout path first. If you don't really have to get anywhere at any time or do anything, being Punafried is tolerable.

They did -- it's called Railroad Ave, but it can only be used in emergencies, and a 5-mile traffic jam doesn't qualify. Whoops!

On the plus side, this saves us from listening to HPP residents' complaining about how everyone is freeloading on "their" roads that "they paid for".

I just saw an article somewhere online, apparently the State of Oregon is going to build a roundabout "big enough for triple tractor-trailers" ... estimated project cost: $2M.

How about if the county does the non weasel thing and paves the E Road takes over the maintenance of 19th and shower so that traffic can come out on the 4 lane of 130 and then pushes thru Shipman to make the whole thing a country road. And then does the same thing up hill parallel to 130, and then one that drops down from 11 towards Pahoa so we have a network of regular roads, Not argue for another 20 years about hacking in a giant PMAR

Correct. Also, people really like parks. Hopefully someday there will be enough parks that everyone can be within walking distance of at least two.

Heading on the loop around to go to Hilo, had to happen. A black, side door van that had the roof and rear chopped out, replaced with folding wood panels and house vent panels instead of windows, comes through barricades, turning right at the stop into the village, swerves in front of me, side door open, hands and legs hanging out. It was straight out of Mad Max.

Phase B is May 2. Once it opens completely, the way out of Pahoa to Hilo is going to be better. It is coming back that is going to get clogged at pau. This roundabout got rid of one T-bone intersection and replace it with a loop, a Y and a U. Used to be a T-bone, now its going to be a loopy Y U. Nice and Puna-fried.
