Speaking of peanuts and acknowledging the quote from one woman that "Education is a waste of time" I like the idea of innovative solutions to community problems coming from that community.
In the 1700's the British Parliament offered financial rewards of up to £20,000 to invent a sea-going clock and the problem was solved by inventive people with primitive tools quite quickly.
We have students from the Big Island winning in international science competitions. Why not direct that talent to our current problem with Styrofoam.
Greggor gave scholarships to Big Island students last year from his Council campaign fund, why not make that a goal oriented scholarship?
Josh Greene has over $500,000 in his war chest with no opponents, for what? How much more money languishes in campaign accounts that could be put to a better use than annoying radio ads?
Perhaps scholarships for dozens of motivated ingenious people working on this problem will make a REAL difference, worldwide.
View this material as an assert rather than an affliction and see what happens. Develop a cost effective workable alternative. and get a $10,000 prize. Or even sell the idea (our share) to International Paper and abolish the need for taxes.
If it doesn't work then ban it, and we all can feel good knowing at least we tried. A ban will not go into effect for two years anyway.
