Thanks for clearing up the "Old Volcano" hwy/trail, Mrs. Mimosa! I checked signs; I was thinking of Old Volcano Road, not trail. I see in the Hawaii Atlas & Gazetteer that Puhala St shows as continuing past 1 Rd (it doesn't in real life) and on down to 40th. It's not marked with any other name, but that's probably the trail.
And yeah, wouldn't a route from Hwy 11 to Saddle Rd be great?
The Gazetteer shows "Flume Road" (mauka of N. Kulani Rd, through the ATV park) connecting Stainback to Saddle Road, but when we tried it a few years back, a bridge was out--probably washed out decades ago. Looked like big 4-wheel trucks had been going through, but our little truck just laughed nervously, so I don't know what other hazards await.
