Imported Dengue case
#1
A message from COUNTY OF HAWAII

The State Department of Health has identified a single imported case of
dengue on Hawaii Island. Vector control crews have treated the person's
residence and adjacent properties today.

Again, this is a single imported case. There is no evidence to indicate a
local transmission has occurred. There have been no reported dengue cases
attributed to local transmission since March. Imported cases occur from
time to time and remind all of us to always be vigilant and fight the
bite.

As the summer approaches and more travel is anticipated, the public is
reminded that the most effective method to reduce the spread of dengue or
other mosquito borne illnesses is for everyone to avoid and prevent
mosquito bites. Fight The Bite by wearing clothing that minimizes exposed
skin, using mosquito repellant, and avoiding activities in areas of high
mosquito concentration during the early morning and late afternoon periods
when mosquito activity is greatest. If feeling ill and unsure if you may
have dengue, remain indoors to avoid getting bitten and infecting
mosquitoes and contact your health care provider.

For information on dengue, visit health.hawaii.gov or call the Department
of Health at 974-6001.

This is a different strain of dengue..It was in HPP and within one mile of our place..I got it for the first time when it was at its strongest 5 months ago..So civil defense stopped by to warn me and give me a lot of bug spray, I hope this is a single incident...

Hi Grumpyscosmos. I am sorry you got sick and hope you are well and stay that way. I am in HPP too and was just slacking off the mosquito spray and starting to catch up on my yard work, but will get back into "fight the bite" mode if what I am about to write turns out to be true.
I was told today by someone active on the FB Hawaii Dengue/Zika Awareness Group that a visitor to Kona (from mainland) got sick at the end of her stay, and tested positive for Dengue AND Chikungunya when she got home. She was contacted by CDC and told that she is 100% positive for both.
She hasn't been anywhere but Hawaii, and traveled all over the island while she was here.
I do not "do" FB, and it's going to take someone with better computer skills than I to get the story on FB.
I'm hoping Tom (or someone) has time tonight to look into it .
This is one time when I will be happy to be wrong ...

Hi Gypsy69 - that video is dated 2015. Does that mean that that virus has been here all along as well as dengue?
