Radio Police Scanner Recommendations?
#1
Any recommendations on a police/radio scanner? I've done a little bit of research but am still unsure of what brand or model to get. I do know that I don't want an app that can be purchased/downloaded onto the phone. This would be a gift for my father who is pretty old school. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Aloha mai SHARKritz. Below is a free link for Hilo and Puna scanner (both Police and Fire dispatch):

(There is also another thread here on PW that provides some discussion. FWIW.)

JMO.

P.S. Radio Shack has several choices; I have the "PRO528" model (from the dinosaur ages...[Big Grin] Under $100.00), however, holds 1000 channels. This model provides full island coverage (incl. police, fire, marine, Civil Defense, etc.), and if wanted, Oahu, and Maui, too.

Thanks for the tip! I'm assuming since our internet and phone connection is pretty horrible, I can bet a portable radio scanner isn't going to cut it either!

Thanks for the link! I think my dad is more of a gadget guy, so giving him a link (although cheaper, ha!) would not entice him. It sounds like the scanner you have is on the same lines of what I am looking for! Not too terribly expensive, yet provides full island coverage. Will see what I can find.

Oh! And I found the previous thread on scanners. Thanks for the info!

I would have recommended the Internet option also.. but it will use your Internet data up.. I listen to scanner radio on my phone all the time, and use any where from 1.5 to 2 gb a month.

Didn't the county spend like 8 million dollars or something to get digital encrypted radios?

Uniden America Corporation announced today another breakthrough in scanner technology. Uniden has been a development leader in radio scanner engineering and is the only scanner manufacturer offering the ability to scan and monitor EDACS ProVoice trunked radio systems. This unique feature is available in Uniden's flagship BCD436HP and BCD536HP scanners.

Maui County and the City and County of Honolulu use EDACS radio systems.
