New Restaurant in Keaau, Not great the 1st time!
#1
We were walking by the old restaurant bar area in Keaau on Monday night & the doors were opened & staff was prepping , so I asked....

Genki Buffet will be opening this Friday, June 10 in the Keaau Shopping Center.
They are in the restaurant bar area that has been closed since Hokalanis left, adjacent to the launderette & hair salon

The buffet table LOOKED like most any food buffet table, usually for hot food... but I guess could be...cold???
Not quite sure HOW you would have a sushi buffet??? more to the point...not sure I want to know!

When we lived in Atlanta, one of our favorite places to eat late lunch was a local sushi buffet, all very fresh, reasonably priced. Always had to chuckle when one of the cooks, a very obviously non Japanese local guy brought out food from the kitchen. Smile each table also had a little sign reminding people, "eat your sushi rice".

I stopped by there on Monday, there's a menu on the door. Asian food, lots of soups. No sushi listed. I don't think it's the same as the Genki Sushi chain.

I was hoping for something different; we've already got Lemongrass, L&L, and the place across the street serving asian food. Imagine a really good Mexican place...

I ate at Genki Sushi in Kapolei, not bad. Would be very cool if they had one on the big island... Tho the locations page doesn't list it on the big island, so I'll wait till I really see it. You are right Lee, there is already enough asian food in that complex. Needs sushi or something of a different flavor. We hardly go eat at keaau, still visit the farmers market. Sometimes food land. Other than that we just shop in pahoa or hilo. Costco run soon! for some reason even lemongrass that I still like is kinda expensive and the dishes aren't as fresh. Dunno, so I hardly visit since, LL is run of the mill local that I don't really have a taste for anymore.

I"d like to see a Mexican place too. There was one in Tacoma, Washington called Chevy's, and it was way better than your average Mexican place. My favorite dish was a mushroom and artichoke enchilada dish, with a wonderful sauce. They were not a smother everything in melted cheese type at all.

Kind of funny that the original restaurant in that building was a Mexican restaurant, Mama Lani's. It was "the office" for many construction workers in the 80's and the favorite Mexican restaurant and watering hole for many in Puna. I still miss it. There hasn't been any good food served there in decades IMHO.

You mean the chain Chevy's? I loved that place, with El Machina making the tortillas. Sadly, they got bought out by Taco Bell, and quality went waaaay downhill.

I've had good Mexican in Kona, why not here? I'll have to try the new place in Hilo again after they've settled in. It was OK the other day. Buenos Amigos or something like that, where Ocean Sushi used to be.
