Kalakoa we may take the offer still.
Just not until we carefully consider the other options during the 15 working days they give us to decide. Don't you worry kalakoa, We would have signed the paperwork already had the relocation offer included any real relocation expenses or been the 130% assessed property values others from this list have received in the past. We are very excited and blessed to have several other options on the family table and the county did provide us with that. The county and realtor are encouraging us to buy back our home at the county auction for less, or take their offer and buy again closer to the geothermal power plant if we want.

Sometimes when you have a difficult decision to make, it can be helpful to make two lists, the pros and the cons. Go back through your postings on Punaweb over the last few years, and in one column note any negative comments about your living situation near PGV, and in the other column the positives.

Then, compare the two lists and if the negatives outweigh the positives you should sell at whatever price is offered. Real estate prices fluctuate. Taxes go up. Things change. Buyout programs adjust their offers based on funds available. You can replace lost money in the future with a little extra effort, a second job or overtime, you can't replace deteriorating health, based on real medical diagnosis, or potential threats you believe could affect your family in the future, threats that continue to weigh on your mind every time you see mist in the air or hear the roar of steam.

"The county and realtor are encouraging us to buy back our home at the county auction"

What exactly is the purpose of all this? Does it mean you legally can no longer complain?

Kalakoa, to answer your " Funny, I didn't realize the "grid" connected East and West."
The whole island interconnected on the grid with transmission lines that encircle the island & go over Saddle (if you look up while driving the main highways, you can even see them)
Interesting side note: after PGV was forced into an emergency shut down when the transmission lines went down during TS Iselle, Kaloko & Hilo generation stations were powering the entire island, as all other production was also down (some due to high wind, some to to downed transmission lines, some maintenance)

There is much to learn about this island, luckily there are a lot of resources to study from....I am lucky DH had answers to your question!

I don't get why the heck they would even mention to you buying it back for less. That's totally weird. Either you are buying houses so the residents can relocate AWAY from there, or not.

I'd probably take the offer as-is just to be done with it. $35-40K and "moving on" would totally be worth my peace of mind.

Edited for bad sentence.

The good news about this relocation program is that each home is only eligible once. Subsequent owners may not enroll their property in the program a second time. No double dipping. So eventually this will stop and the fund can go back to supporting the entire community.

I don't get it either. What's with the scamming mentality in Puna??? Holding oneself to high standards and ethics is a good/necessary thing. We don't need local government albeit lead by a criminal mayor, to drag us down any further. Step it up folks.
