Alaska prices were less than Hawaii for some reason in the south central area anyway. Milk two gallons for 6 dollars.. etc..
It is shipped from Seattle then trucked over 300 miles in my old community .

Nothing has to be trucked or flown in.
There are 21 different micro climates that exist on the planet
19 of those 21 exist on BI.
Practically everything in the world can be grown on the island.

Could but wont..Hawaii may have some of the right climates.. but the leeward side is to dry.. the big Island for example is only half covered in soil... there is an inadequate power infrastructure to supply power to all these food processing plants. lots of reasons why it's not practical.

1. You don't need power plants to process raw vegetables.
2. It's obvious to everyone that in Kau/ S Kohala and such it is not possible.

So, they have massive food processing plants that process all these raw vegetables on the mainlland?

Have you ever seen how it works?
have you ever picked vegetables from a farmers field?
Seen them loaded onto trucks and sent off to local markets?
Does that take a nuclear power plant?
Ever seen a farmers market require outlets at each table?
I've seen hundreds of farming operations and I can clearly say, you're full of beans

What we have found out.
We made an appointment this morning with the head of the SNAP program in Hilo at the old Food Fair building .
A single person can make $1200.00 a month before taxes in order to qualify .
That same person can drive any type of vehicle they wish to.
Car payments do not count as household expense nor does insurance on said vehicle .
Electricity does count as a house hold expense , as does a water bill and phone bill.The phone bill is capped at 21$ a month.
Rent is considered a household expense but land payments or house payments do not.
A single person can not have more than $2000.00 in the bank and can not have life insurance nor a burial plot .Plus no investments in stocks or bonds .
A person who is not certified as disabled and able to work,MUST have a job of a minimum of 19 hours a week to qualify.
Felons are NOT eligible for SNAP .
The SNAP program now requires a verifiable address and they do send out workers to verify .
No general delivery is allowed .A person must have a P.O.Box and a home - and the beach is not a home unless has a state or county permit saying a person has permission to camp or live on the beach .
A vehicle can be called a home but not the beach.
A single person can not receive SNAP anywhere in the nation more than FIVE years in their entire life span unless deemed disabled permanently .
A person MUST report all income of more than $39.99 a month be it cash or taxed to be eligible for SNAP .
The average SNAP benefits for east hawaii island are 128$ a month for a single person .
Gone are the days of getting off the jet in Hilo an headed right to the welfare office to collect a hand out.
Nationally the SNAP program is being reduced 10% yearly for 10 years .
No state is exempt .

Aloha Dave - We get it - where you live over on the continent food is cheaper .
This is an island - 95% of food items are shipped in and taxed every step of the process - so your taters at .69 cents a Lb on average here are $1.29 a Lb
A gallon of milk from america is on sale 5.99$ a gallon .
Do you have rat lungworm to contend with in your fresh salad as we do here or leptospirosis (sp?)
The health Dept rules and regs are very stringent here and for good reason.It is the sub tropics and food borne illnesses are a threat to the entire populace .
The USDA has even more strict rules here than where you reside .
So does the DOH .
One of the good things here is a person on SNAP can purchase seeds for veg and fruit tree's to raise their own fruit tree's and veg gardens .
Until you actually live here Aloha Dave we understand fully that foods are cheaper where you live than where we here on Hawaii the Island live .
