Project to collect feedback about Mauna Kea..

Project aims to collect feedback about Mauna Kea’s future

In today's Trib is an article announcing a project, being led by Susan Maddox and Friends of the Future that according to the Trip:

"will set out to document residents’ vision for the mountain [Mauna Kea] as far out as 100 years through a series of meetings around the island."

and further it is reported:

Maddox said she hopes to have the process finished in a year, but there is yet no timeline for when the work will get started.

There might be eight to 10 listening sessions around the island, she said.

“The process is really unfolding,” Maddox said.

For more information, visit http://envisionmaunakea.org

At the envisionmaunakea.org website it says:

The futures of many of Hawai‘i’s residents, on-island and across the State, are intertwined with that of Maunakea. It is essential their voices are included in the community’s effort to create a lasting vision for the mountain. With that need in mind, the EnVision Maunakea program was designed as a community-based initiative to gather a wide range of perspectives on the mountain’s future, and put these valuable insights in the hands of decision-makers. This program will inform policy and regulatory actions that will deeply impact the summit of Maunakea...

I know Susan and Friends of the Future and their work that goes back more than 20 years on the island, and couldn't think of a better person to head up such an effort. Even today she is instrumental in helping members of many community initiatives understand and work with the intricacies of government and the different funding sources and all their bureaucracies. I look forward to this being a great program to collect everyones mana`o and hope everyone on all sides of this issue support Susan by participating in her effort to collect and present our many and varied thoughts.

Maddox told the Tribune-Herald she wants to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves so not just the loudest voices are heard.

“You tend to hear things you ordinarily do not hear,” she said.

That would be a good start.

Mahalo, dakine. Here is a (partial) video of the meeting:

Mr. Lehua Vincent, and Mr. Herring Kalua, are very well respected in our communities. Both are honorable, and reasonable Hawaiians. FWIW.

Especially since the TMT debacle, there seems to be a genuine effort (some fairly new; post Supreme Court decision) for better management and planning on/for Mauna Kea. This is quite encouraging.

We shall see what is waha nui (all talk), and what actually materializes.

Dakine, Thank you for starting this thread and sharing that link.

Something that struck me the most about that PRO-TMT-PR meeting aimed for collecting feedback about Mauna Kea, was The middle age gentleman in the video. He got a bit emotional over being the generation that has been skipped and is still feeling ignored and under appreciated after years of work, dedication, passion, and malama.

Somewhat seems a little late for this groups compassionate ideas, but its usually better to be late than never to show up at all.
Several other area groups ( Rob's PW forum comes to mind for one ) may have already had these types of discussions prior to this newly formed friends of the future group? Just a suggestion here, Maybe friends of the future should reach out or include some of those other groups to gather what they are considering important. Who knows, It may help lead to a better group head start while also including another form of random community members who also are Mauna Kea loving folks. Jmo.

P.S. Both Dakine and Opihikao have long had my vote to be part of this new groups panel discussions about the future of Mauna Kea.. Jmo.

Can't see the forest for the trees... it's pretty thick up in here.

Well, there's that, but how does one claim "long had my vote" to be members of a project that has only just been created?

Speaking about projects wanting to collect Data or INFO?
A concern about the TMT project i have is that Mauna Kea's summit becomes a tourist trashed target like Pearl Harbor has, jmo. I don't want to see our next generations once calm and peaceful mountain used to possibly help weaponize space or be an important part of a missile defense system or a world Quick strike nuclear "deterrent" plan. After hearing that China a strong "TMT partner" Boldly shot down their own broken or outdated satilite from space, made me question what kind of "DATA" the Chinese may have been protecting. Jmo.
NASA does have a $8 billion dollar plus "JWST" getting ready to be launched in the year 2018. This JWST could have some "DATA" worth saving, recollecting, or protecting around the time the ?? billion dollar TMT project is scheduled to be complete. Would the TMT atop Mauna kea be working, receiving, or sharing space Data with this new NASA space satilite jwst?

Envision Mauna Kea is by it's nature a project of immense undertaking, and I'd like to thank Susan Maddox and Friends of the Future for organizing the effort. No doubt there will be a large amount of information gathered all across the island, let's hope it's substantially accurate and useful information.

These days it's easy to have giant hard drives filled with data, and access to an even larger cloud memory storage. But let's not forget what's important is not how much data or info you've collected, but whether that information is correct. There's a term for it in the computer world, GIGO, or garbage in, garbage out. It even has it's own wiki page:

... computers, since they operate by logical processes, will unquestioningly process unintended, even nonsensical, input data ("garbage in") and produce undesired, often nonsensical, output ("garbage out"). The principle applies to other fields as well.

Hopefully, no one could imagine that it would be helpful in any way for Envision Mauna Kea to waste their time collecting inaccurate comments from the public, polluting the sacred with the byproducts of deception and distortion.

Hotpe, good morning to you. I was asking the questions hyperthetically thinking what might be possible 100 years from now atop Mauna Kea's summit. TomK didn't leave or add anything of substance in his last couple of posts, just darts as usual.

The TMT does seem like it will eventually happen sooner than later. The TMT may have or want to use some new age technologies covering the northern hemisphere, from the northern portion of Mauna Kea" ideal location". This seems very strategic to me for many reasons. I just want to discuss the possibilities "if" one of those reasons would or could improve a militaries accuracy or response time for future weapons?
