Harry Kim the hypocrite !
#11
Thank you Opihikao for being you. I learn so much right here on PW by wonderful people like yourself and others. Always appreciate your opinions, knowledge of Hawaii and how Puna or it's people have come to be. Yes we will survive, but would we have ever lived?

Yes (we always survive; for generations...we are warriors.) and yes, we will, have lived...fully. That is our charge.

Aloha ahiahi, gypsy. Tomorrow is yet another day. [Smile]

ETA: P.S. To take this back to the OP's statement, it is my belief that we are ALL "hypocrites" at some point in life. What we learn from that experience tends to mold us into better people, at the end of the day...

I'm not as gracious as Opihikao. Different culture, different personality, different mood. Who knows?

Your question;
"...Why would Harry Kim not be getting your vote exactly? His Health, His age, his not spending enough back when the population was reduced ..."
My answer;
I don't agree with Opihikao that he is (was) a good man. He was always more a thin skinned and arrogant public employee careerist . He ripped off the County with the most "over time" paid, ever ! He refused to hire a Deputy CD Director for years so he could keep raking it in. The personality change he went through in the '90's was due to massive coronaries... Which while it proved he had a heart, and did improve his disposition, did nothing to improve his preparedness or capacities for governance. He relied on his Deputies, Andy Levin and Billy Kenoi, to manage and run the County while he slouched behind the desk. He resented Billy Kenoi and petulantly ran against him in '12 thinking that as an "Applicant for Mayor" the public would restore him as "the Man". His two losses in 2012, Primary and General, did nothing to diminish his ego. Now as a 77 year old man he wants to "Restore Trust in Government". Well that's like Donald Trump wanting to "Make America Great Again"! We're more than "great" enough in America, and there's more than sufficient reason to "trust" our COH government;
Do we have an adequate Public Safety force ? Check.
Have our COH services improved? Check
Are County parks, roads, and facilities being built and then maintained ? Check
Has public employee increases been brought under control? Check.
Is our debt within reason? Check

You may be a ill educated. In which case I apologize. Or you may be obtuse. For which I don't.

Yes, you are entitled to an opinion BUT it brings with it an obligation to better inform yourself of the facts available and to apply a reasonable semblance of logic and judgement to what you learn prior to your developing and opining your "jmo".

As it is you have a ways to go, e.g. Your most egregious statement recently made being your silly speculation about our hosts identity. Ridiculous!

Get a grip Gypsy....

First, HiloPuna, we can agree to disagree that he was/is a good man (I tend to follow Papa's teaching that "there is a little good in every bad man, and a little bad in every good man. No one is perfect"...).

All of this/your statement above is true. No question (during the time frame stated). My comment comes from circa 1950's, e kala mai.

I admire you calling a spade a spade, it takes an awful lot for me to be so direct, due to Kupuna teaching (try to be understanding, and patient, etc.) Mahalo.

We cool Opihikao, you're the best! Love your contributions!

I just go back to the early '70's, turning 19 as I arrived, so I can never be local, and that's okay. I just try to pay attention and not forget the important stuff. I appreciate all that I've learned , gained, and lost here.

Oh, and I try to let the manini stuff go....but sometimes I just gotta vent, Pu'u O style!

Aloha ahiahi, HiloPuna. As long as you don't want to "blow a hole" in the side of Pu'u O'o, we're good. [Smile]

He may have gotten the most overtime ever, but it was for services rendered and far from a rip off. As one that was there working side by side with Harry during the period (I assume) you are referring to (1990 - during the inundation of Kalapana) I can tell you we all earned our keep. Unless you were there, dealing with the myriad of issues and all the needs and emotions of the community on the 24/7 basis that we were you don't know what you are speaking about.

Your vehemence is striking and comes off as one that is twisting things out of proportion to satisfy your own agenda. Is there some underlying reason why you have so much animosity? I mean go ahead and list what you see as his shortcomings but by the way you express yourself I sense there's some personal pain behind your rant.

No personal pain, just general dissatisfaction with a man I view as much a charlatan as a public servant.

I can forgive a Mayor with hubris ( Billy), arrogance (Steve) but not self serving (Harry).

My specific criticism you are alluding to is that he declined to build his CD department but instead favored himself. You and I have had this discussion previously....
And I think we've had too much of a Harry hagiography in our community so with that perhaps my perspective seems jarring. My viewpoint is not that uncommon though.

I think you have Vacationland confused with Beach Lots.We don't have a gate.
We also have quite few Hawaiian owners.One with the last name Honohono and a good friend of mine who tends to and harvests limu with the last name Kanakaole.
Another Hawaiian family just upgraded their beach cottage and put up for sale.They also filled in their cesspool and installed an aerobic septic system.
Harry has admitted to me that he doesn't use his oceanfront house a lot because he can't flush the toilet at high tide.That's because his cesspool has been underwater since the subsidence back in the 70's.
