Discoveries using the telescopes on Mauna Kea
#51
how discovering things outside of this planet benefits us in the here and now

It doesn't, unless there is political will.

if a telescope could have let us detect global warming 50 years ago

Global warming was understood 40 years ago. Big Money saw it as a threat, so obsfucated the problem for decades. It might not be too late to undo the damage, but we lack the political will. Getting off this rock is possibly the only hope for our species.

The discoveries aren't being made by telescopes on Mauna Kea.

Not all breakthroughs begin and end with Kepler and Hubble as you claim. If you spend a few minutes reading the earlier posts in this thread, I think you'll make a big discovery of your own, with very little effort.

The moon kind of surprises me sometimes. I’ll be out at night and I’ll see a nice moon, and say, “Hey, that looks good.” Then I’ll say, “Oh sh-t, I went up there one time!” Kind of surprises me. It’s like there are two Moons, you know—the one that’s usually around, and then that one. - Michael Collins, Apollo 11 astronaut

I know I should ignore this but I couldn't stop myself. Sorry in advance.

Oh, well, then you'll be happy to know that Global Warming was discovered on another planet first, Venus. The first successful probe to measure the Venusian atmosphere was Russian Venera 4.

The descent capsule of Venera 4 entered the atmosphere of Venus on October 18, 1967, making it the first probe to return direct measurements from another planet's atmosphere. The capsule measured temperature, pressure, density and performed 11 automatic chemical experiments to analyze the atmosphere. It discovered that the atmosphere of Venus was 95% carbon dioxide (CO2), and in combination with radio occultation data from the Mariner 5 probe, showed that surface pressures were far greater than expected (75 to 100 atmospheres).

In the '60's and '70's measurements of temperatures shocked scientists and the discovery of the effect and coining of "Greenhouse Gases" was based on research of Venus. In fact the idea was further expended to the concept of Runaway Greenhouse Effect is based on Venus and many parts of climate change research is based on comparisons to Earth and Venus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_greenhouse_effect

So yeah, astronomy has many direct benefits and you picked a perfect example.

They are scanning thousands of stars and galaxies now, essentially setting a flag when an object of interest shows up. Then observatories all over the planet decide which objects they will investigate with longer observation. There are a lot of jobs involved but very few on this island, probably a few hundred up around Waimea, a couple hundred around UHH, who knows how many thousands visiting and working.

This is utter bullsh*t. If you search the ADS database for papers published in physics and astronomy over 45,000 show up all based on data from instrumentation used on Maunakea. Kepler can not do the same things that can be done on Maunakea, same for Hubble which is at the end of its life. You seem to think every thing pointed at the sky is the same; they aren't. Take an astronomy class and learn the difference before you spout on about it. https://www.coursera.org/learn/astro

Also I know for a fact that almost half (42%) of the Subaru's full time employees are Hawaiians. But hey, let's just build another costco and buy more junk because that'd be a much better use of Aina, job creation and use of electricity.

pahoated scribbled:

"Radio telescopes can see more than optical telescopes. These are the last days of large ground based optical telescopes. Even ground based radio telescopes are too limiting. Sticking to something for nostalgia sake is dumb."

Since stars tend to be radio quiet, radio telescopes have a hard time detecting them, a bit of a drawback for stellar astronomy, which is, of course, a rather large field of research. You just don't get the concept that telescopes operating at different wavelengths study different areas of astrophysics.

Just a further note - if you were to build a radio telescope that could provide the same resolution as the TMT, then the radio telescope would have to have a diameter of about 7,000 miles. (Based on typical radio observations using the 21cm line of hydrogen and the TMT operating in the visible at 550 nanometers).

Mr nice guy,

I'd suggest reading a couple of articles that you might find interesting. They are UK-centric but apply here as well:

Whoo Hoo,,,,, thread has it all tonight ...

Paul sniffing Tom

Tom over posting his average ppd with regurgitated, needlessly defensive info + stuff some of many of us have seen already in order to boost his ____ persona.

HOTPE playing the middle as if it's like I'm cool

PT all over the place. But it was probably caused by an early afternoon bottle discovery.

New guyschiming in + railing against an already built up force he never knew existed. Apologies Eric and Mr. NG.

Ready, seeet GO. Nowyou guys turn to defend why its always the same from you ...

"Tom over posting his average ppd"
----
And airport parking chimes in, without a clue. (Why would anyone want to trust you with their car and your fake business?)

"Members are to limit their posts to five per day average" means, As Rob has pointed out many times, it isnot a daily limit. The word, AVERAGE means something. TomK is well under the limit:

Total Posts: 4401
[1.66 posts per day]

It seems there are two or three people here who want to throw in anything they can think of, whether fact or fiction, to distract from the topic.
