Where do they come up with these poll numbers?

Those poll numbers are not that surprising really. Many of our Native Hawaiians from the "Big Island" have had to move over to the mainland when they get priced out of paradise, or their homeland. Many Native Hawaiians who have been priced out of Oahu, move over to Puna or other parts of the Big Island. Many even can still afford to buy places in Ainaloa, PPark, and Hilo because of our Housing affordability "Compared to OAHU". They also score many of our better jobs with Helco, County, and soon to be the Mayor position too. Jmo
I also think The other half of the Native Hawaiians WHO have already had to leave their homelands should also have a chance to "vote" on this TMT project. They should not be ignored or forgotten due to doing what was best for their families survival today. The state of Hawaii should have kept records of these Native Hawaiians who have chosen to leave their homeland during the duration of this current Observatories "50 year plus" tenure or use of their Mauna Kea. Many of these folks continue to live on the mainland for various reasons, some would love to return home someday to reconnect with their families, cultures, and traditions.

Please name one Native Hawaiian who moved away from Hawaii for the sole reason that there are telescopes on Mauna Kea. If someone left, it was likely due to work, finances, family, education, etc, all situations unaffected by the presence of an observatory on Mauna Kea. You can't connect the two events. Although I know that won't stop you from trying.

People move out of hawaii because the cost of living is cheaper ... the wages are higher... better education .. healthcare..and hawaii tries to brag about culture. But I'm not sure they know where their culture is evolutionary wise... considering they are 95.75% dependent on other cultures to provide their infrastructure... for basic necessities.

...No I'm not dissing Hawaiin culture..I've lived among Tribes of native mainlanders.
Native Alaskans.. native artic circle villages in canada.. I've seen alot of different 'cultures'.

Polls don't mean a damn thing, especially at this point. It is all in the hands of Judge Amano, and possibly, another court or two. Getting to the basis of the pros and cons of TMT's permit (if it is reissued) is secondary to the real problem, which includes lack of following protocol (legal and cultural).

Thus, we are all listening to the rhetoric from both sides, and the "positioning"/damage control of the pro TMT group(s). So be it. Propoganda at it's best.

Frankly, I take great umbrage at the continued lack of respect for our cultural rights, and blaming us for being unreasonable. Additionally, we are not a tribe, nor is there any other culture exactly like ours, including other Polynesian cultures.

We can find balance, even after the State/BLNR/DLNR/UH screwed up, if this issue doesn't continue to divide us as a community.

Of note, the situation TMT finds itself in is due to the "infrastructure" USofA provided in the legal arena. BLNR/DLNR/UH/OHA and all these State entities need to wake the hell up, and cease trying to avoid the particulars of the legal process. The machinations (that continue) are appalling. Do it right, or don't do it at all. Period.

HOTPE, good afternoon.
These telescopes are not new to the island economy, in fact, Mauna Kea is home to thirteen telescopes. They have been part of the big island economy for 50 years and now our keiki are being held hostage by them today. What started out as a small Idealistic project "the first telescope" offering plenty of hope, faith, and promises for our local communities has turned into Disney land for the astronomy community over the past 50 years. The TMT project will bring more people from other foreign places who will help drive the prices of everything limited on this island up, that would include everything. jmo

Why does the astronomy community get a castle or temple on our Mountain when many of our people are going Homeless below?

Why couldn't the Hawaiians be able to build a temple or observatory on the summit of Mauna Kea?

Would I be allowed to build my dream SKI RESORT on the Summit of Mauna Kea?


When the first road was made atop Mauna Kea for the Astronomy community, Others then also started to visit the area that was once KAPU. Now you even have POKEMON GO players visiting the summit You think the astronomy community planned for this type of environment, activity, or mentioned it in their prepared EIS reports?
The Tmt rep's may claim the project will cause very little impact to the summit region of Mauna Kea. This is very hard to believe when we have seen or felt the separating or rift impacts being caused within several communities by this TMT project that hasn't even been built yet.
