ah, the General Plan (again)

Funny how the pattern keeps repeating itself:

The audience voted that improving services in underserved growth areas is more important than adding more affordable housing in existing villages and towns. Underserved areas in particular mentioned by the meeting facilitators are Puna and Ocean View.

I completely agree with the priorities of the General Plan:

Conservation topped the list of concerns for those participating in the exercise, followed by the cost of housing and then traffic congestion. Coming in at the bottom were natural hazard avoidance and more stores, services and jobs near their homes.

Conservation, restoring the forests and preventing invasives, should be number one priority. Bringing cost of housing to more affordable levels is a good wish. Traffic congestion, the tourist industry should be paying in more to municipal. Natural disasters should be higher, right after trying to prevent invasives. Services and jobs near their homes is a rock bottom priority with me, too. Totally agree with this majority view of priorities.

Totally agree with this majority view of priorities.

Problem being, the "majority view" is mostly decided by "people who had time to attend the meeting".

the majority of those packing Hilo Council chambers are retired, followed by self-employed and working for nonprofits. The group was primarily 60 years and older

I especially liked this bit:

Currently, Hawaii County, with a population of about 195,000 people, has already zoned enough development to allow housing for 852,000 people, Childs said.

How many vacant lots in HPP, Orchidland, Nanawale, Leilani.... The problem with more affordable housing is that unless that housing is government controlled which means only the poorest people can utilize it. On the other side is that if housing costs drop, more people move here from other islands and the mainland.

The problem with more affordable housing

The bigger problem is that there's only enough infrastructure for about 125K. If the population grows to even half the "existing zoned housing"... hilarity ensues.

The idea of government subsidized housing for anyone other than those in absolute dire need is an insult to those of us who have enough dignity to be responsible and work hard. Humans are born with feet not roots, if you can't keep up with the current trend walk on down to the airport and get on a plane to where it works for you. This is just a tiny little remote island on very big planet. Exposure and travel is the best education and one of the best resources available to us. Entitlement over others is not a healthy or positive quality.

just run for office already.

Planning on it -- but have to move to Hilo first, and that's expensive.

Did you check with Tiffany whether there's a back room for rent in her Hilo house?
