I think I have the same unit MarkP described. My biggest complaint (other than the ones I have already whined about above) is that the push bar is far too low even at its highest setting for anybody over about 5' something in height. It also has a feature where you can engage or disengage the blade- a feature I really don't care for (more crap engineering that will eventually fail) and it complicates the controls because instead of just walking behind a mower you also have to hold down the bar that keeps the blade spinning and use the other hand on the control that makes the self-propelled feature engage, and then use your third hand to manipulate the too-low push bar to move the mower around. I wound up putting a cable tie on the blade-clutch-engager-device because 90% of the time I hate it. I can slide the cable tie down to disengage the blade if I want to.
I looked at online reviews, I'm not the only one who complains about these "features" or the back-killing-way-too-low push bar.
The engine on the unit is awesome. Never fail, never problem, first pull start every time. It also uses less gas than previous mowers I've owned.
If you have a small lawn, it might be perfect for you. On a larger lawn using the controls will aggravate your arthritis if you are old enough, or it will give you carpel tunnel vision if you're not. Carpel tunnel vision is like carpel tunnel, except that in addition to the hand and wrist pain, you can't see yourself wanting to ever use this mower again.

Just bought my second 22'' walk behind Toro from HD, so far so good (one mow). The first one awesome and still runs, though I haven't gotten around to repairing all the broken things on it, all from what I would consider normal wear and tear. I have a similar break in the metal below the discharge door, which I figured was due to the blade striking the deck due to the horrible things I've put it thru. Seriously I have tried everything I could to trash this mower and it still runs! Hoping the new one will be as good. It is the "SmartStow" variety, which means the handle folds over it and then it tilts back on its rear wheel for storage. You could hide this thing in a linen closet it takes up so little space. I did NOT opt for the variable speed option, since as noted, extra gizmos, extra things to break. The SmartStow causes the handle to be a slight bit lower than before, but nothing I can't handle, and I'm six foot.
So far I love it, but like I say, just one mow so far.

My Honda was bought to replace the HD Toro you described. It lasted 2 years before it developed a problem with the fuel system. I only use ethanol free gas. I'm guessing carb but I'm no mechanic. I replaced it rather than taking it for repair because I figured the cost would probably be similar. I should have got the extended warranty. Other than the fact it doesn't start or run, it was tough as nails. Way more sturdy than this Honda. I wish there was a way to put the Honda engine on the Toro.

Thanks for the reminder on the fuel, although I have always run ethanol free gas as well. What is ou,reminded me of is I noticed that they have changed the gasoline again, placing alcohol in it so it evaporates quicker, and makes the rubber parts in the carburetor dry out even faster. My generator has a fuel shut off like a motorcycle tank so I can run the carburetor dry after use, and have plans to add shutoff valves on all my other equipment.

Too bad you didn't Google "Toro mower won't run" or something like that. The Toro/Tecumseh fuel system problem comes up - with videos of the fix - when you even Google just the model number of my Toro pusher. Requires a wrench and a wire from a twist tie to fix.

I googled extensively. My toro doesn't have that type of carb. There were no clogged holes.

Ethanol fuel isn't new - so why haven't the manufacturers of these products adapted to it?

The only way to adapt is to use fuel injection. Probably a little too expensive for a lawnmower.It is death to anything with a carburetor ! The problem is the ethanol fuel stratifies and separates into layers.The ethanol absorbs water and also attacks certain rubber hoses,aluminum and resins.
