Anyone know of a good large animal (horse) vet in the Hilo/Puna area?

Kelleyerin Claybough 313-0267

She is located north of Hilo, but comes to Puna.

Care to share what procedure is required or what the injury was?

If it is just a castration, I would recommend any vet on island.

If this is a deep lava cut injury, my opinion, with all due respect to the veterinarians on island, is that unless anesthesia is *really* needed I would hesitate to get a vet involved; daily wound dressing and cleaning for a few months even in severe cases is sufficient.

Good luck to that horse Smile

It's just a case of conjunctivitis (pink eye) that hasn't gone away, though I haven't treated it very aggressively until now.

Forget the vet for now: If natural solutions and cleaning don't work then first go to Miranda's and ask for "Vetericyn for Pink eye", this stuff is effective:

A vet might treat with anti-inflammation, anti-bacterial or antiviral agents and in all cases have unwanted side effects or worse, including a drained wallet. Try the nice folks at Mirandas for advice for treating and the medical supplies you need.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I actually already bought that stuff at Del's. It seems to work, but hasn't gotten rid of the infection, probably because I haven't been applying it diligently enough.

Kelleyerin Claybough seems to be on vacation for the moment. I have gotten a last minute appt. with Dr. Wood from Waimea Veterinary Associates. She comes down to Hilo/Puna one day a week. I'm always interested in learning about other vet resources though.

Yes, I would probably just up my treatment if it weren't for the cloudy cornea. All references I read say you should call a vet if the infection spreads to the eye. I'm always paranoid about uveitis, since I've had a donkey with it. It seems to recur over and over, and you basically need to put them on a permanent dose of aspirin, which is a real pain.

Is cornea cloudy because of LFA ? This has been happening with animals all over Puna:

Good question. There are a ton of LFA in the area. I'll treat it with some Amdro.

Naturopathic Dr. Sally Boyd in Pahoa might be able to help you. She used to shoe my horse.
