how is water bypassing sediment filter?!
#11
Is there a piece at the bottom of the housing that is supposed to contact the lower end of the cartridge, sealing it there and causing it to seal against the top, which may have gotten dislodged? Out of sight, out of mind perhaps?

Maybe you got a couple of bad 20 micron filters. It's probably to late to see if they have the same lot number.

That's a good idea about maybe a bad batch of filters. Our system, we are using a 30 micron, and then a 5 micron, then to the UV light. If anything, our system should need filter changing at shorter intervals, yet we get very good life out of ours. Often I replace them when I sense the pressure lessening a bit, or when I see lots of gook in the clear 5 micron unit.

By the way, to terracore, I woke up the morning we were to be hit by the first of two hurricane, and heard water leaking somewhere. Went outside, very slowly, as I recently blew out my right knee (see don't make this mistake thread) and am hobbling about with a cane. I saw that, the water from our catchment tank was running over the edge. I knew instantly what was happening, as I had just dealt with this at my daughter's house, and had commented in your thread about this too. Our overflow system had one or more trapped air bubbles, and was not operating. Had to do something ASAP, as with a huge amount of rain following soon, it would have eroded away the dirt and gravel holding the tank level. I was able to get it done, and it's still okay.
Don't know how or why it suddenly malfunctioned, since it's been 5 years since we moved here, and we've had zero problems with it.

Our intake in the tank is at the bottom...

Do you mean near the bottom? It shouldn't be so low that it draws up accumulated sediment on the bottom. Newer intake systems have floats that are intended to keep the intake submerged but not so near the bottom that they can draw sunken crud into the hose. They rise and drop with the water level. I believe these are inexpensive.

I had that same problem.
My intake line was partially underground. (The pipe going to the pump house)
One of the glued couplings had opened up underground and was leaking out until the ground was saturated. Whenever the pump kicked on it would suck up a lot of that dirty water.
I ended up digging up the pipe and found it. Actually my cat found it first. there was a puddle there and I noticed him drinking out of it.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

So either the water is bypassing the coarse filter or else the coarse filter itself is defective. I'm sure by now you have examined the filter housing carefully for any anomolies, so I guess try another brand or a string filter to see if that makes a difference.

Edit to add: I can think of one other possibility and that's contamination in the line between the two filters that hasn't completely been washed out, although if it's happened on both of the last filter changes it's unlikely.

About my knee? My Doctor says, from the x-rays, that I don't need an operation. No broken bones, or damaged bones. Everything is in alignment. He says it will heal, but suggests I see their Physical therapists, and I do have an appointment with them.

Now, after the blood work results, he's worried about my PSA count, so someone from Kona is supposed to set up an appointment for me to go over to be checked out.

Yeehaw!!

I have so many farm project backlogged and so many competing priorities it will be awhile until I can look at this. I may burn through another 5 micron filter far before it's "due date" before I have a chance to look at the filter housing again. For now the water is still coming out of the spigots and the housings aren't leaking... good enough for now.
