Hungry Boys and Girls

I agree. Bring a bunch of food. Feed them. I still second guess on donating money though.

Speculation is just that EW ... Indeed you should curb it for you are factually WRONG. Please clean and rack your broad brush.

If anything, you should be calling LD out for his lack of empathy. It's not the first time we have seen this side of him. Hence him deserving my comment. "He has issues" as my co-workers would say.

What i would "speculate" about both of you, 1. You do not have children and or 2. Fortunately for you, you never experienced a situation whereby you needed help. And maybe #3, just don't know what is truly happening for real all around us.

I see it everyday and people like dudeboy make me sick.

Don't believe it ? Go down to DHS and talk to them about child welfare. 75 Aupuni St. # 205. Give them your opinion on above topic and see where it gets you. Then go to DHS on 13 Kekaulike St and talk story with the folks sitting there waiting to get probing interview for SNAP.

While it is easy to blame the parents, it is never good to not help the kids improve their own situation.

Hawaii Island has some harsh problems (from UH Center of Family 2015):

* 26% of 42,750 youth are in poverty conditions, more than double the state average
* 66% of kids get free or reduced cost lunch when other parts of the state average 48%
* 20% of people are below federal poverty level on Hawaii Island, almost double the state's combined average
* Hawaii County has the lowest median household income in the state averaging $10,000 less than all other counties

If giving away some snacks helps them focus on improving their education, I'm all for it. In the long term education is a critical component in changing these problems.

Aloha and Mahalo, opihikao, for your gracious welcome to me. I always enjoy reading your thoughtful posts. I propose Hawaii Island is an especially diificult place to get an education, obtain a well paying position, and raise children to do likewise. It is my sincere pleasure to help, and it gives me a new connection with you all. Gratefully, Missey

A couple of you have apparently missed the point I was making.

Rewarding adults for their continued poor choices by giving them additional money/food for every additional child they produce is part of the problem. That is what "we" in society need to address. Where is the incentive for the parent to achieve something more out of life?

airportparking/troll - please stop with the insults and name calling. (and at the least, try to learn how to do a "quote")

I agree with leilanidude. Parents who let their children go hungry with the plethora of handouts available in Puna should be held accountable. Go to the root of the problem as opposed to glossing it over. These parents are exposing their children to more than just going hungry.

We're talking about giving the kids snacks like bananas and such. You're trying to lump a lot of other issues into it.

If you want to change things, then start to volunteer and get to know the people and the types of problems the community faces rather than make generalizations that they are underachievers.

Parents who willingly let their children go hungry should lose custody until they value the health of their children. If you keep glossing it over you gloss over the other abuses inflicted upon these children. If they need snacks to get thru the day they should be scheduled for investigation.

You have to set your priorities. Would you rather help the kids or spend even more money tracking down and punishing the parents? The results of which will ultimately hurt the kids as well. Spending time helping the kids and showing them they are important and can achieve more out of their lives so they can help themselves is a far better cause in my opinion.
