There is so much new technology available for geothermal development today (not 30+ years ago, when TruGeothermal (Mr. Richard, remember him?) sold to ORMAT/PGV, etc.), the question is: Is our community getting the best and newest technology to avoid these kinds of incidents?
I suspect that the usual suspects would be protesting any new construction at the PGV.

Maybe because they're surrounded by industrial uses?
Hmmm. It is a couple blocks from Target, Safeway, Walmart, Home Depot, Prince Kuhio, Office Max, Ross, etc. I wonder if that area of Hilo has the highest _human_ presence per square meter on the east side.

All of which are "indoor activities" with air conditioning...
That said...

All those people are outdoors when they walk through the parking lot, and it's a huge cross-section -- basically everyone on the East side, at one time or another -- yet nobody ever complains about noise/odors from the HELCO generator plant.
Either the generators aren't noticeable, or there's a psychological factor.
Makes me wonder: what if PGV announced a new geothermal plant to be built on Railroad Ave...

HFD says... "Firefighters were called to Puna Geothermal Venture at around 3 p.m.
However, officials tell us the public should not be alarmed, and there’s no need for evacuations.
Hawaii Fire Department battalion chief Gerald Kosaki says monitors at the plant showed hydrogen sulfide levels at 15.7 parts per billion, which is well below what’s considered dangerous.
Hawaii Fire Department also conducted their own tests and the plant and around the perimeter, all of which showed zero readings for hydrogen sulfide..."""
Thats exactly what FEAR MONGERING looks like!

Hey smart guy, I only passed on exactly what the HFD dispatcher told me and also what Harry Kim advised. Maybe if you actually lived in the neighborhood you might be a little more human in your response to this issue.

We have residents talking gleefully on this forum about selling their house to the county and then buying it back for a profit and continuing to live there. Apologies if I can't get too concerned about this.

Ha! Makes me wonder: what if PGV were replaced by one of those Dickens-esque traditional oil-burning power plants.

Still no health or environmental studies are apparently warranted even though people in the geothermal area are getting sick and the Ohia trees are dead.
So does this mean that you're accepting the County offer and moving your family far away from this deadly dangerous facility?
Or not?

continuing to live there.
And people who declare in no uncertain terms how dangerous the emissions from the plant are, but yet if a leak has occurred, drive straight to the site and source with the highest level of deadly emissions available for a human to breath. Kapoho Joe makes a more rational decision to evacuate, if you think there might be danger, than Robert Petricci:
UPDATE (8 p.m.) – Robert Petricci of Puna Pono Alliance said he was on the scene taking readings between 4 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. and did not detect hydrogen sulfide with his equipment, but said “it smelled very bad.”
“My lips and eyes are burning and I threw up it smelled so bad,” Petricci wrote on Facebook afterwards.

So Harry has already re-appointed himself the Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator already?
No surprise Harry would declare an evacuation - he declared a County Emergency for the 1991 solar eclipse and closed down the Saddle Road to traffic because of the potential threat to the public...
