What in the sam hell are my taxes doing if we cannot afford a school bus that picks every child up at their house?
I hope this is a warning to all parents, we have rapists among us so please do not trust your children to be able to fend for themselves.
My heart goes out to the children who were traumatized for life and their families.
Here's hoping that our local 'boys will be boys' judges will actually serve up some justice this time.
Oh, and Patrick Noah Torres? If you make probation or some other form of early release, I will be looking for you. We need to talk.

Don't hold your breath waiting for any of the local judges to do anything severe. A heavily ingrained tendency toward leniency seems to be the number one quality required for appointment to the bench in Hawaii.

From the brief article,it appears these kids lived within Pahoa Village close to the school. If so, they live too close for bus service. I believe the distance is 1 mile.

I was wondering which store as well LD, but the article is kinda vague "stopping for shelter near a store in the Puna District". I think that description could fit more than a few places.

It also could have been in Shores/Beaches, they have Da Store. Is Orchidland called Keaau or Pahoa?
Even where we have busses, the stops in many subdivisions are only at the intersections with main roads, so there are kids waiting in the dark every morning all across Puna. When I lived in HPP I saw kids getting in fist fights at the bus stops on a regular basis, and one time I stopped some kids who were ganging up on one kid right before they mobbed him. Many parents wait in their cars until the bus comes, and this stuff is why so many others drive their kids to school every day, adding to all the traffic on the highway.

Unlike most states, Hawaii charges for school bus service. Some families can't afford it and have their children walk beyond the usual distance required for the bus.

No good spending money on big shiny parks if the keiki are too traumatized to play.

If your kids get free and reduced price lunch the bus is free.

Which "service" drops you off at the edge of the pavement...

Thanks, shockwave. I didn't know that.
