Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. My coax cable is very old and definitely am going to get a new one, I wouldn't be surprised if that's part of the problem. Terracore, you mentioned you bought a good quality one online. Do you recall which one it was?
Kenney - my understanding is lower HPP is not a good place for 13-1 and 13-2 reception, and that the further inland you are (and higher up) the better your chance of getting a signal.

I managed to get the 45 channels this evening although it's not great reception. Bizarrely, I have to point the antenna almost directly to the west and then, of course, none of the other channels show up...

Does anyone know whether an antenna for OTA tv reception works in Nanawale? I'm looking for a cheap solution to getting some tv time, esp. PBS and maybe one mainstream channel. I would like to get a cheap used tv and try it out before investing anything further.

It used to work at my friends house at the corner of Forest and Hapu'u, if that's any help. He got several local channels.

Make sure it is a digital TV. Analog tuners, some manufactured as late as 2007, will not work.

You can still get "the box" a friend of mine still has one, works for analog.

Hey, thanks, it's certainly worth a try. The antenna I have is indoor (rabbit ears) so I'll have to see if that's adequate.

I wouldn't bother with an analog -> digital converter. The cheapest converter I could find was this one on amazon.com:

While the up-front cost of the digital TV is $60 more, it will pay for itself quickly in energy savings compared to an old analog TV.
