The University uses Natilus Dive Center, 382 Kamehameha, just down from the Hilo Farmers Market - 935-6939. I think that it is the only eastside shop with a compressor, but not positive. There is a new free dive shop on Keawe that a lot of the students are going to, just down from Ponahawai St. They are looking at getting more SCUBA equipment, but I know that mainstream SCUBA distributors can be hard to obtain for a start-up, and they are situated real close to Natilus, so that could limit their suppliers (some suppliers have geographic limits that make little sense in areas with any population, some having 10-25 mile radius exclusivity).

Having been many, many years sense the last time I dove I’ll need to take a refresher course before got wet again. Also what does the equipment cost to get back into to it again? When I got certified Scuba Pro just came out with the “Jet Fin”. If you remember that tid bit your old too!

We checked on Hydro's last fall. Airgas sends tem out (could not find a Hydro station on island, and Airgas would be the main user). It would take about a week, and I think $20-25, but the details are fuzzy, at best.
Royall, How is it your "old", yet Jet Fins came out when I was taking my Advanced Cert.(so of course I had to get them. What a pair of boat anchors compared to todays gear!), Hey I still feel young, most days. Since I was diving the Macinac Straits, I also had a neoprene "Jet Suit" drysuit with manual inflator (never ever added air after the first time I blasted a little 42 deg. water right at my chest) Thanks for the memories, and reminding me why I moved to Hawaii.

Wow, Carrie, that is the first time I have seen the Mackinaw Straits mentioned on the Punaweb. Are you, were you, a Michigander or just a visitor. Sorry for straying off subject. Scott

Bringing this forward....Are we gonna meet on Saturday? Wet or dry run? If wet, SCUBA, Skin or combo of both? I am going to suggest combining the 2 suggestions made for this weekend. Meeting early (9am ish)at the Black Rock Cafe (15-2872 Gov. Main Rd. Pahoa). Since weather, surf & currents play into our diving, we can decide from there. Hubby & I will most likely will not bring tanks, unless it is the only way to go. (I don't know the Champagne ponds. Where is it, entry type, is it good a good site for snorkelers? Picnic & toilet facilities?)
Seeb suggested meeting at Black Rock Cafe.
Andrew suggested:
Saturday April 15 let’s do a 2-tank dive at the bay that is beside Champaign Pond. Drive in past the lighthouse and park by the pond. (I am open to a different location and since I don't know where the dive spots are in Puna anyone can feel free to chime in but lets get it nailed down soon so whoever wants to come can plan ahead).
11:00 am till whenever.
Bring your own equipment obviously.
During the rest interval between dives we can eat some lunch and we can discuss plans for the dive club. Here are a few thoughts for discussion:
1. Name for club.
2. Choose a domain name and ideas for a website for getting news out etc.
3. I'd love to hear about potential dive sites in the area.
4. Purpose of club (besides diving).
5. Whatever else you can think of.

Carey & All:
I didn't think there was enough interest for meeting this Saturday so unfortunately I made other plans for this weekend. I will not be in attendance. Sorry to drop out.
I am still very interested in forming an East side club though. Lets try to make it happen.
Andrew

There is a group of us up in the Glenwood area (Mt View to Volcano) planing on establishing a formal dive club this summer. WE are in process of revamping our own scuba air compressor to fill tanks and building housing for it. I say everyone get out there and dive, form clubs, dive buddies, etc... and my friends and I will be on board soon. Just have to finish up a few projects before I am ready to hop in.
Alona and LET'S GET WET!!!!
