It's difficult to change the format of a listener-supported station because many of the donations are made in support of the music. Back in the day, classical was a great at-work listening option, not so much any more.

Classical stations are definitely on the decline. NPR News/Talk is the ratings grabber for public radio. HPR gets the advantage that the News/Talk format provides since they have a second network of stations. That's not the case in many (most?) places.

Classical music is one of the few things (like reading books) that can increase your IQ. Not only that, it's an incredible art form. What I can't understand is how something like hiphop can get so much air time when 98% of it is crap. Listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?index=6&v=o1dBg__wsuo&list=RD3l9gGY8DHNY

I have extremely eclectic tastes, however, and love to have a variety of music available.

UPDATE:

The FCC has approved the new broadcast frequencies for HPR. They will begin broadcasting both formats, HPR-1 (classical music) HPR-2 (news & talk) to East Hawaii sometime next Wednesday:

October 26th
89.1 HPR-1
91.3 HPR-2

Both formats from Hawaii Public Radio are now live statewide, and should be available to most radio listeners in East Hawaii:

HPR-1 - KANO @ 89.1 FM- Classical Music, Morning and Evening News
Program Schedule:

HPR-2 - KAHU @ 91.3 FM - Talk Format (Local, Tech, Human Interest), BBC News, Jazz
Program Schedule:

Tune them in, and as TomK mentioned earlier:

Received both signals for the first time this afternoon (10/26). Unfortunately, the original HPR-1 signal (91.1) has degraded from 3.5/4, to 2.0/4 (Now on 89.1)where I live (19 mile marker, HWY 130, about a mile above Uncle Roberts).

The new signal for HPR-2 91.3 comes in at about 1.5-2/4), which is barely audible.

This evening, the station told me they are now at 100% on the transmitters, and this is about as good as it is going to be without additional translators installed somewhere.

After waiting 15 years for HPR-2. This is REALLY disappointing.

I second this....we are on the Hamakua coast at mm 18. We have NEVER been able to hear hpr-1 at our house, but the signal came in on our road where I could occasionally have a "driveway moment." We were so looking forward to "improved" signals. Now not only can't I hear hpr-2 on the new transmitter, now I can't hear hpr1 within 7 miles of home.

Just stream HPR over the internet! Right?

The wife always said that when they get both stations here in Leilani she would become a monthly supporter. Still waiting....

Are you using an external antenna? Even a random wire will help quite a bit.
