From The Top
#1
Heard this today on NPR https://www.eventbrite.com/e/from-the-to...8468100856 Many of us are fans of From The Top on Saturday mornings. It’s a national radio program on NPR that features performances of young students from around the country that are dedicated and very talented musicians. On November 30th it’s going to be taped at Kam Schools in Keaau for future airing on NPR! That’s a big deal.
Someone on a recent thread about our new public radio stations asked how anyone could listen to classical music. I fear that the dumbing down of our culture is almost complete. I’m no music snob. I grew up in the SF bay area in the 60’s and spent most weekends at the Filmore listening to every rock and roll band worth their weight back then. My tastes are very eclectic and I also love classical music. How can you not appreciate classical music? I think that Bill Maher was right when he stated that the amount of dancers on stage is inversely proportional to the quality of the performer. If you need a dozen people twerking with you as you are belting out a tune then maybe you just can’t stand on your own. I hate to sound like my parents but most of the popular music today sucks. My rule of thumb is that if you can imagine the tune you are listening to being played in an elevator in 20 years then it probably has some universal appeal. You won’t be hearing Lil Wayne in any elevator in the future. Mozart, the Beatles, the Who, yes. They are already in the elevators.
Anyhow, I’ll be there supporting and enjoying these young people that get it on November 30th. If you go you will hear some quality music.
That’s my rant for today.

It's funny - when I'm on the mainland I can't get enough of classical music (usually aired on NPR). But when I hit the islands all I want to listen to is Hawaiian music. I can't get enough of it, and I have zero interest in classical, as in, it doesn't sound "right" in Hawaii. Go figure?

Thanks for posting Peter.

This should be a chance to hear top quality performances by young musicians from East Hawaii, and see what dedicated students are capable of achieving here. So often we hear about schools in Puna that are deficient in one way or another, as well as the lack of opportunity or jobs for our keiki. This event will showcase students who buck that trend, who make an effort to take advantage of what's available here on our side of the island.

If you like classical music, even a little bit, think about supporting these talented kids as they play for a nationwide audience, probably for the first time in their young lives.

Peter noted in his post that the radio program From the Top will take place at Kamehameha School in Keaau, to a live, local audience.

For the record, it was more shock that a classical format had listeners here, not that I don't appreciate it. Smile
