The research carried out by astronomers using three observatories on Mauna Kea: Keck, IRTF, and Subaru. Comets contain a lot of information about the history of our solar system and even how life may have formed in the first place. This study is particularly interesting to me; as a young astronomer, I studied molecular ices surrounding newly forming solar systems and star forming regions to try and gain insights into how the building blocks of life and planets themselves evolve in the early stages of formation. It's nice to see these studies starting to be integrated with our solar neighborhood.

Here is an article about a New instrument "CHARIS" now being used at the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea. Astronomers were pleased with it's first light and excited about the discovery possibilities CHARIS brings.

NGC 6357: Cosmic 'Winter' Wonderland

This was a joint project between UKIRT on Mauna Kea providing optical/IR data and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope.

The image which combines the data from all three observatories is quite stunning!
