leilani orchard
#11
We are in mid Leilani, about two miles down. It seems we are in a bit of a banana belt compared to some areas of Leilani. All of the afore mentioned trees, but also we grow figs, poha berry, seedless blackberry, lilikoi, and huckleberry. The berries fruit several times a year. Yes, some of these are vines or bushes, not trees, but great additions to the food landscape. We have every type of citrus, they are so happy here. And multiple varieties banana. I would recommend a couple of clumps of the giant clumping bamboos. They are such a dramatic focal point and so nice in the breeze. And you gotta have at least one coconut tree, planted far from the house or road!

Kiana, I love figs, yours grow well? Also have keki cocos ready and lilikoi. I have a source for blackberry not seedless though. Plan on lots o banana and citrus. I just like saying hucleberry ( like Val Kilmer in the quick and the deasd)"I'll be your huckleberry". Cracks me up every time. Poha berry? still dont know about all the fruit and berrys here after 2+ years. I love to learn about new things and Puna is full of things new to even a well travelled western PA boy.

Went to the HTFG sale and swap in Leilani this morning. Got a Beck early navel orange and an Okitsu Wase early satsuma mandarin. Never heard of either variety but they sounded good when I googled them there. More research at home indicates I made good choices. There should be another sale in a few months. I really wanted a Tarocco blood orange, but the only one sold before I found it. They should have more for the next sale and are the only source on island that I know of. There were a lot of other uncommon fruit trees available.

Had a good chat with shaveice, but got distracted by seeing Oscar Jaitt and never got back to look at her plants. Sorry about that! It was good to meet another Punawebber face-to-face.

The fig trees do very well, yet they seem to have some type of pervasive rust or other spotting on their leaves. Doesn't seem to bother the fruiting, but, would love to know how to treat it. Anyone out there know? Poha berry is the gooseberry. We prune ours to grow more bush-like, but they are technically a vine and are also big fruit producers.

A little jackfruit goes a long way, our tenants gave away hundreds of pounds this year from the jackfruit tree at our old place in HPP, and they even like the fruit!
