This rather skimpy HNL daily article says that multiple cluster mail boxes between Hawaiian Beaches and Kapoho four corners were stolen:

It inaccurately says these locations are in Hilo. Anybody know more?

A grocery store near my house had the metal pipes stolen off their refrigerated container. They lost thousands of dollars of meat and the criminals made off with maybe a hundred dollars worth of metal.
In this situation, think of all the grief caused by missing important mail, for the small scrap value. Some people only think of themselves...

Too bad our police department is so ineffective.
Assume the best and ask questions.

And even if the police catch someone, the judges will let them get off way too easy.

This happened on Govt.Beach Road between 4 corners and Papaya Farms Road on the east side of the road.
The boxes were plastic and had no scrap value.
Update !
The boxes were aluminum, they had replaced the plastic boxes after they had been broken into repeatedly.
I'm not sure how you could sell 3 entire cluster boxes for scrap.

Stealing mail is a federal offense. So with the potential penalty if they're caught being so great, no doubt the geniuses behind the operation, or if not the entire crew, at least the brains, the Mr. Big calling the shots must have formulated a master plan for each step required to pull off the heist.
Don't you think?

I was looking at the cost of these things... not cheap. Around 1500.00 for a cluster of 16. That doesnt count the package box clusters..those are another 1100 to 1300.00.
Aluminum once melted down .. is easy to get rid of.
But not worth federal prison I would think.

I used to work at a brewery and one of the geniuses in the delivery department started selling the empty stainless steel kegs to a scrap yard. He even used the brewery's delivery van to do it. The scrap yard figured out that there wasn't anything wrong with the kegs and called the brewery asking if these were legitimate sales. Long story short he was fired and the case turned over to the police.
It should be easy enough to canvass the aluminum buyers and find the mailboxes and perhaps the sellers. Another possibility is that a consumer of aluminum down on their luck had something to do with it.
