Thanksgiving

It's not a holiday I grew up celebrating, so always feel a bit weird this time of year. However, I wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving and hope you have a wonderful day with your family.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too TomK and the Punaweb tribes and pilgrims. As a lifetime participant of Thanksgiving festivities, here are a few memories I'd like to share from over the years:

* Sitting down at the kitchen table with a big sheet of construction paper, while I colored a reasonable likeness of a turkey by tracing my hand with crayolas. Using the outline of the thumb as the turkey's head, and fingers as it's tail, those basic appendages could be festooned with details of a beak and eyes and wattles and feathers. I largely accomplished this with a single brown crayon, but some dabs and strokes of red and orange would elicit oohs & ahs from the adults in the room.

* When I started eating turkey for Thanksgiving, it was in an era when it would have been strange NOT to eat turkey on the holiday, and even stranger to eat turkey on any other day of the year. Except leftovers the following Friday and Saturday. Now I'm a vegetarian.

* We thought the Pilgrims and Native Americans "sharing" a dinner together was a good thing. There are different historical views of the occasion now, but today, let's be thankful for the people who are here, living with us in this moment, as well as the food and drink we enjoy together in what has become over centuries, the spirit of the holiday.

The wife and I started a new Thanksgiving tradition this year, and it really is about giving thanks to what the 'aina provides us. 100% of our Thanksgiving meal is being made ONLY with things grown/harvested on our farm. The only concession we are allowing ourselves is salt because unless we move to a waterfront location, there is no way to make that on our farm.

We made this decision only a few weeks after starting our vegetable garden so our options aren't as good as they are going to be next year, but traditions have to start somewhere.
